Manual or Automatic

l might sound a bore ( but l'm not) just looking for some simply pleasures in life,
Looking for a 996 for a bit of fun, ( about £12-15K)
Any thoughts if to go for manual or automtic gear box

I would get tiptronic for a laugh and to Annoy people on here.

You can always say the new GT3 only comes as a auto and is the future.










I am joking of course and would rather put pins in my eyes than drive a tiptronic slush box.
I don't get why people ask this question though, only you know what you want !

It's the unanswerable question, and will rage on until all of the manuals are dead and buried.

I believe that if you have to ask, then you probably don't care about manuals. Manual drivers know.

But try both yourself and decide.

You do not sound like a bore but you sound kind of silly. Sorry, but I'm just being honest 'cause I do not have a mean bone in my body.

Why do you care what people here think of the transmission choice for the car you're going to buy and drive? Are you going to ask them about their exterior colors, interior colors, options preferences, too?

It is whatever type of transmission that you feel suits you best.

Buy the car you want be it a Tip or a manual.

People do exactly that on here quite regularly. I find it quite puzzling. 'I am buying a 991S and want advice on what colour is best for resale'

But the best one is, 'What options are best for resale?'. Er, none! They ALL depreciate!!

The best color for resale is on a good used car that you didn't pay too much for (read overpay for) and took care of while you owned it. As time passes color and options count for less than price and condition.

If the car is grey/silver you sell that it is a good safe color and when its new owner goes to sell he will have a very good color car that is in high demand and will be a more valuable car as the result.

If the car is poison tree frog green you sell that it is a unique color when the new goes to sell he will have a very rare color car that is in high demand and will be a more valuable car as the result.

What we should be grateful for is the huge choice Porsche have given us over the years. There really is a Porsche for everyone!

I drive a tip 2003 C2. I agree that a manual would be more fun and better on a track. However, the tip is fairly swift and makes for a very leisurely drive and when you want to get a move on it still steps up to the mark.

These days, no matter how tempting, you can't drive at very high speed on UK roads. The tip enables comfortable cruising and easy handling in traffic, also there's less chance that it's been subjected to high revs.

If I was buying a 996, I would seriously consider Tiptronic.

Although I'd prefer 6-spd manual, the Tip isn't bad, in fact it's a very good auto, and at least you'd know that the engine and drive-train wouldn't have been abused by a feckless driver.

Certain specs and colours make cars far easier to sell on, and will also affect the resale price. A car without an option that 'the market' deems necesarry can, a couple of years down the line, be almost unsellable without a knock-down price.

I'm sure most of us would love to be able to buy cars new, spec fully to our own desires and whims, and completely ignore future residuals, but not everyone is quite so flush and resale becomes a considering factor.
(I agree that speccing a car solely with resale in mind might be a bit daft, but it is a worthwhile consideration for most of us).

I could afford to buy a Ferrari new if I knew I wasn't going to lose money on the deal (A friend who is a serial Ferrari owner does this - buys from new and sells 9-12 month later at a premium whilst there's still a waiting list), but I've never been that brave.
