Help needed with GT3 motorsport part (crank pulley)
Discussion
Hi there
I need to find a new/good used crankshaft pulley/vibration damper (996 102 115 95) for my mk1 996 GT3.
This part is spesific for non CS mk1 cars and it's only available from Porsche Motorsport division. Anyone here with good connections to Motorsport division? Maybe even someone in UK has this in stock?
Part of the problem is I need the part delivered to Finland quickly as we have our main track event in August 23-24th. I have inquired this from several places in Europe but no one has it in stock and the "promised" delivery times aren't quick enough.
The reason I need this is that the original pulley/damper disintegrated. The metal weight that has been vulcanized (10mm thick rubber in between the pulley and metal weight) to the pulley itself got loose as the rubber got old and brittle enough. I was very lucky the weight didn't brake anything when it flew off the pulley. I heard loud "clonck" and after I stopped the car the weight was loose in the engine bay..
This has been known to happen before so anyone with mk1 non CS should consider at least checking it properly. I know Manthey recommends to change it with these old GT3's. The original part number is 996 102 115 93 but it has been updated to one ending -95.
I really appreciate any clues where to get this quickly!

Sorry if this stating the obvious, but it's not clear from your post if you've already tried it - AFAIK any OPC can order the part if you have the part number (which you do). They don't have the catalogue, so won't know what it is but will be able to quote a price and hopefully delivery time.

This pulley is on all the short rod engines though regardless of flywheel.
That's interesting to hear. I was under an impression that mk1 CS's didn't have this because of the much lighter flywheel.. Indeed PET shows only one pulley for mk1 and two different ones for mk2. Why didn't I see that before. So did early CUP's have this "rubber" pulley as well? That's even more interesting! One would think some vibrations wouldn't be such a problem in a race car.. unless the dampening offered from this is considered absolutely necessary for the engine's well being?

I've got one from a Cup in a box at my unit. Won't be able to look it out until the weekend though. I can also order directly from Motorsports in Germany for a new one (rather than through the OPC network).

yeah it's the same pulley on all mk1 (short rod engines) Cups, Clubsports & Comforts.. This pulley is on all the short rod engines though regardless of flywheel.
didn't you give me one of your spares for my build Neil, or did we throw my old one back on, can't remember...?

I heard even the first 996 RSR ran the same pulley.. sure Neil will confirm. So did early CUP's have this "rubber" pulley as well? That's even more interesting! Its not on there to balance with the flywheel, its there to dampen the engine itself. Without it there would be risk of critical failure internally. As such every car with the short rod uses it. I have a couple kicking about somewhere. They end up surplus when engines are rebuilt using long rods. As a side note, ive heard of a couple of GT3 engines rebuilt to 4.0 spec using larger pistons (and not the longer stroke crank and 3.8 size pistons) failing catastrophically internally as a result to harmonics. I hear on the grapevine that a solution is being sought using a vibration damper on these sort of builds but info is very limited. I dont know if its isolated to one type of piston design or a general feature. Just interesting in the context of this discussion ref the use of a vibration damper on the Mk1 engines and its importance in some designs.

Couldn't they use the 'Rattler' which I think Steve at Vibration free sells? As a side note, ive heard of a couple of GT3 engines rebuilt to 4.0 spec using larger pistons (and not the longer stroke crank and 3.8 size pistons) failing catastrophically internally as a result to harmonics. So I got a new pulley eventually. It was 617€ with tax and express delivery included. So it's not cheap as the mk2 RS pulley is 80€ in comparison.
Anyway.. mine broke at the track with 95000 km in odometer. My car has been Mantheyd since 2003 so maybe the little upped rev limit has something to do with? Anyway, check yours next time you take the exhaust off your car!
Also public thank you to Neil(fioranO), for offering a helping hand when needed!
