THE NEW BOXSTER - TOO TIMID?
Discussion
I've got the latest Christophorus, and been down to AFN Guildford.
The new Boxster has an identical interior to the 997. For good reason - it saves on production costs. This was the way of it with the old Boxster and the 996.
I am on my second Boxster S...so I feel qualified to comment...
All hail the new Boxster.
Same as the old Boxster.
It really is an evolution. There aren't two body panels the same - but the overall effect is identical. On the road you'd be looking very closely indeed to tell it was the new one.
As to the interior. Its looks positively fugly in pictures. When you are sitting in the car its not so bad. Although I prefer the interior in my 03 model - at the moment...
The extra 20bhp also seems a bit mean. They're desperate to avoid the BoxS competing with the C2 - which is, lets face it, a car with more margin in it.
260bhp in mine. 280 bhp in the new one. Not really enough of an upgrade to get me rushing into AFN with my chequebook.

I agree with everything said here, although I think the interior of the new 987 beats that of the 986.
Let's wait until the Boxster Coupe arrives and see what that's like. It could be a very good driver's car indeed.
In terms of the conservative evolution of the Boxster and its possible merits, well it won't hurt the value of my Boxster S will it? Phew.

Has AFN got the 987 in the showrooms now then as they told me it was not going to be there until Nov 27th launch? They said look at the 997 for now as it has similar interior and wheel design cues. I have been waiting for the 987 to come out rather than go for the facelift 986 and must say from what I have seen in pictures and spec wise I am pleased I waited.
Nw the only issue is go for the roadster or wait for the coupe next year or 2006.

Can you still buy a 986, other than used? Certainly if you have been planning a new purchase it makes sense to get a 987 rather than the run out of the 986. Same price - a bit more go.
My comments on this thread are from the perspective of someone who already owns a 986. Persuading *you* to buy a 987 is very different to persuading *me* to upgrade.
Whichever one you get - I'm sure it'll be great!
Edited to get the numbers right

Last night I went to the launch of the Boxster at AFN Guildford. Blimey! Do they know how to launch a car! We were marshalled to a carpark about a mile up the road. We were then chauffered to the showroom in a Cayenne.
More champagne and nibbles than you could shake a stick at. (Really cheesed off I had to drive home!)
Lots to see, inc. the new Carrera GT, heritage section and of course the new Boxster. I liked the look of it, but I'll reserve judgement until I've driven it. test drive booked for 18th December.

Concerning the coupe I saw it coming out of the Zuffenhausen factory last week and took a quick snap, check it at

It is a back shot unfortunately, although it drove just one meter away from me......
PS No comments on here on the fantastic time of the new S in Top Gear last night (1.28.7)??
Well, I had my test drive. Overall, very impressed. Beautifully built and finished, drove very well (I'd never driven a Boxster before) with nicely weighted steering, and a nice ride. Wonderful gearchange, which really flattered the driver.
But.... it just didn't feel all that quick. It certainly wasn't slow, but it lacked any real sense of urgency. Naturally the steering didn't compare to the Elise, but then of course it wouldn't. Salesbod said I should come back and drive the 'S' which I duly shall.
Is the 'S' really that much quicker, for having the extra 40bhp?

Cheers Ettore. I think if I go the Boxster route, it would have to be the 'S'. Mrs. XXPLOD also drove the Boxster and said she thought it was slower mid range than her BMW 320td. So I looked up the torque figures and was quite surprised.
Boxster: 270 Nm
Boxster S: 320 Nn
BMW 320td: 330 Nm
I don't know what the mid-range performance figures are, and I know the way the torque is deliverd is very different, but I reckon a Boxster would have to give it pretty much everything to beat the BMW on the say 30-75mph test. I know I've got to really give it some in my Elise 111S to keep up with 'er indoors!

Ahhh. xxplod - the S is a good deal quicker than the standard Boxster...but its still no "muscle" car.
The S does give you a six speed box which helps. The really key thing though is that the best part of the BoxS acceleration really comes in above 4Krpm. You really need to keep it on the boil if you want it to feel quick.
There again...its nice around town below 4Krpm.

Im guessing that the demo car wasnt fully run in?
I picked up our Mk1 Boxster in October and was so dissapointed with its performance, I believe I even posted on here to say the car was just one big dissapointment. Now I love it to pieces and would have a MK 2 without any hesitation - although I will probably go for an S.

nice snap of the coupe, what did you think to the ass end i'm still not convinced on the shots i've seen
Well I went to see the new Boxster today at my local OPC who has just built a fantastic new showroom. My main interest was in the Boxster S of which they had 2.
I have to say I was very impressed and I will be testing one next week. You could certainly see an improvement in the interior and the seats were so much more supportive than in my current car
I was suprised to be offered a car immediately or to my own spec for April or May. I was under the impression that lead time was still around 8 mths.
The other option open to me was the GTS, the OPC is "guessing" it will have a 3.4 engine and it will be 10% more than a Boxster S.
Decisions Decisions, anyway I will give the S a run next week and then try and decide what to do - the other option is to go for a Noble, but after today I will possibly have a rethink on that

which OPC was that?
Jay-Aim
It was Bristol, very nice new facility out by the M5.
The bit that has left me confused is that he gave me a price for one of the S models in the showroom of £43K and I feel it was bit low. He suggested it came with part leather as standard
The spec was:
Midnight Blue Metallic Paint
Stone Grey Part Leather
Wind Deflector
Carrera 19" Wheels
Climate Control
CD Autochanger
Upgraded Sound System
Colour Wheel Crests
and I think (not too sure) PASM
Unfortunately Porsche's configurator is currently down at the moment so cant check.
Dealer nodded when I said deliveries in November and said you can place a deposit now and leave the decision as to Boxster or GTS until 23rd February when the car is announced
