Over the last week I have popped out to a couple of Porsche specialist dealers.

Unfortunately the cars I have seen have been very sub standard; I wouldn't use the term ropey but definitely untidy and unloved looking. Anything from heavy extensive stone chipping- and I'm talking at least 250 stone chips on the bumper of one car (incidently this was a completely different shade of silve to the rest of the car) to very worn interiors with the centre console on one looking like it had spent its time as a mini cab! The leather was worn, the door openers looked like they had be taken off and put in a cement mixer for a couple of days.

Of the three cars I saw two had bad bumper alignment at the front and/or back. One of the cars even had a huge 4" chunk out of the side wall of one of the tyres.

I don't think I'm allowed to name who I am talking about but I was very disappointed by the quality of the cars; I have bought better condition privately!!!

Fortunately they aren't too far from me so I've only wasted a couple of hours each time. If they don't up their game I can see them losing their good reputations. I know one of them now runs a separate business and I wouldn't be surprised if you see it being downsized / wound up / cease trading.

Thats a very dangerous statement ....

I know quite a few of the specialists will show cars pre-prep and at least one allows you to buy them that way as part of their sales model, so not sure where the issue is, and is this with one single indy near you or is this across a few ?

More than one dealer. Don't see why it's dangerous; the cars were not good quality; fact. Specialist rely on a good reputation; if they start stocking cars that are not up to their usual high standard then it obviously puts that reputation at risk; if the reputation is tarnished then they get less return customers so the business suffers. Basic sales model really.

zero corrosion

Chips are not a problem as long as attended to.
Most dealers show cars as they come in and deal with all issues.

Or you could go to an OPC where the wheels, bonnet and bumpers get sprayed in a tent in the car park by a blind man. Lasts about 6 months before it looks ste. Don't ask me how I know
frown
Prefer to see my cars as they arrive, and then get them fixed properly.

That would be unfair to the dealers to state that. I am in the SE and can travel for the right car!

Totally agree.

We all know who you are talking about and I for one am very, very surprised with your statement as they are known to be amongst the best in the business and having purchased myself have nothing but praise for the staff and attention to detail - my car was presented in a condition I can only describe as 'as new'

Different people have different experiences. I have a couple of friends who have also been looking recently and when we were talking a couple of weeks ago they mentioned they had seen some lesser vehicles at a lot of places.

There is even an OPC that have recently bought a shed load of ex fleet cars and a friend has mentioned they are not of the best quality. There is a shortage of decent cars; anyone looking knows this.

The cars I have seen were tatty, why shouldn't I say so? I seem to remember plenty of people moaning about a certain dealer recently because they were selling damage repaired cars- don't seem to remember people getting on their high horse about that.

I'm not sure I'd expect all the cars for sale to be in tip top condition as long as they are priced accordingly and sold honestly.

I think it's more than fair enough to share that post - always get the usual BS from car sales around only picking the best stock etc. - reality is unless it's a lemon it will get taken in at the right price and an oily rag wiped over the top.

It's better to buy privately in some cases from real enthuiasts.

So 'they' were tatty?

I can't speak for the OPC you mentioned but with regard to the company you're talking about I would suggest there are a far, far more happy than unhappy customers who will read that and think that frankly it's difficult to believe. I also didn't realise you we're party to their business plans and were in a position to make us all aware of their next step - what makes you think they will close down a perfectly respectable business that's making money - it isn't the norm these days but perhaps you know better? (Let's review your statement in a year just in case I'm wrong wink )

I'm looking at 996s at the moment, and am realistic about what wear & tear to expect on a decade old car.
Do you really expect a 2nd hand car dealer to replace a scratched door handle?
I'd be more worried about whether it'd been serviced properly, it is after all, a 'used' car.

We may not even be talking about the same places. Even if we are, have you been there recently? Have you looked up close at all of the stock??? I am talking about a particular vehicle I went to see at different dealers, and quite frankly they were not up to scratch.

One place only had one member of staff working and the place looked like a ghost town. This was my experience at the times I visited, there is no argument to be had because you weren't there and didn't see the vehicles.

For Christ sake why are there so many busy bodies who think they know best??? Get over yourselves.

My statement stands; my impression from the experience is if they carry on selling the type of cars I went to see and do so in the same fashion then people will get fed up with them. My impression from that visit is that the dealers I visited have dropped the ball. Others may have gone on the same day and thought they were acceptable, but for me that isn't the case and I won't be going back to any of them to buy a car because it has cast an element of doubt in my head.

Purely my opinion and others are free to have theirs.
