996 4s timing chain tensioner leak

Hi

Recently acquired 996 4S has a very minor amount of seepage around the large nut under the engine. I have managed to find out that this is one of the timing chain tensioners. I understand that the washer can corrode and cause a small leak.

Is it just a case of undoing and putting on a new washer or do the camshafts need to be locked before doing this. I am getting conflicting advice.

I have no problem taking to a garage but if it is just removing the nut and replacing the washer I can do it myself.

I had the same on my 996 Targa. I had mine replaced at an indy, as they needed to remove the tensioner assembly to replace the washer, which meant re-tensioning. This it was about an hour's labour all in. I got them to dump the oil and replace as I'd lost a fair bit.

Parts cost was only £1.50 though!

Any pictures/part numbers?

Is there a procedure for doing it anywhere? I'm thinking torque values, etc.

Mine is weeping a little at the same point. I'd be interested in your experiences. Some people say to to just put the engine at TDC to take the load off, others want to use locking tools.

I think theres 3 of these tensioners left right and middle. The right is on top of the engine.

There is an updated tensioner design that has a metal spring to help prevent a bit of clatter on startup.
