£7k 986 Boxster as a daily driver

Evening all, I'm sure cheap pork has been done to death, but I'm new to this part of the forum.
Hopefully a new job will mean switching my 140 miles round trip mway commute to 18 miles each way of b roads - so looking to get out of the Jag XJ as it will no longer be fit for purpose.
£7k seems to get a solid 986 Boxster so I'm having a sniff around. I'm not too fussed re 2.7 vs the 3.2 S, I'll go with the cleanest car I can find unless one engine is more reliable than another?
Could any of you kind folk link me to any good threads / buying guides so as I know what I should be looking for beyond normal used car stuff.

You'll be fine, I commute 23 miles each day in my 2.5 (the car that started the thread that EDC has linked to), its a 98 2.5 and is a real blast on B roads, since buying mine 18 months ago I've fitted a new hood after I split the plastic screen, upgraded to a glass screen at the same time and have had the front rads done as a pair.
Car is good fun, buy one with good history and all should be ok, I bought mine intending to keep it 6-12 months and its still with me, will probably keep until the 2 year marker then move on.
Also mines worth just 60% of your budget roughly !!!

Great car to do that sort of commute in.
My first 986, a 3.2 S, was written off in a non fault accident at end of April. Up until then I was using if for a daily 35 mile commute on a mix of A & B roads where it would return in excess of 30mpg.
I've replaced it for a 987 3.2 S which is even better as a daily driver. I'm 6ft 2 & the slightly extra leg room in the 987 is a blessing.
£7k will see you in a good one, always buy on condition. Personally I think the extra torque & 6 speed gearbox of the 3.2 is worth having especially for a daily driver.

Imo you want a facelift car - for the roof with glass that demists and won't crack in the cold. Our 2004 2.7 has been her daily driver for near 5 years, never let us down, always makes us smile.
We had the choice of pre facelift 3.2 or post lift 2.7 - and have not regretted the choice since. Neither car will see off a hot focus, both are great round the twisty bits. I hope whatever you get brings the same enjoyment as wor lass' car has for us.

I *love* the idea of a cheap Boxster runaround, but with the impending arrival of a 4th car in a few weeks (and only me with a full licence, my gf has literally today started learning!) and currently living in a flat in south London with no garage and working in London, it's difficult to justify

You must be driving your car too kindly if you can't see off a hot Focus. A well driven 3.2 will see off some fairly exotic machinery if driven in a committed manner. I run a facelift 2.7, which is probably worth around £7K these days. I was very choosy about exactly which model having read (far too much) about the various engine issues. But I also wanted the updated hood and interior.
In 12 months of ownership it has cost me a major service, a cat heat shield and an ignition switch. Fuel economy seems to be mid to high 20s.
It's a lovely, light, modern drive (somewhat different to my 964!) and makes an excellent all seasons car. One drawback in the winter though is that the door glass sticks to the inner and outer scraper seals, so the windows don't drop and rise when you operate the door handle as they're supposed to. Once in the car this is easily remedied using a credit card. It is fast enough, once the 2.7 is wound up, and makes some pleasant induction noises once you have sufficient revs/throttle in play.
