sorry another thread on this, but id like to ask if maintenance would be much more expensive on a 944 turbo compared to a 968
i guess age is a small fcator, but the complexity of the turbo and cooling system is more my worry on the 944. Im thinking now that the 944 maybe a better buy for me as it has more power (easily uprated), uprated suspension as standard and LSD, although ofcourse some bits may be worn or need replacing.
owners insights appreciated

A 20+ year old 944 will probably need a head gasket and a clutch will cost more than a 968s to replace. Beyond that: not a great deal of difference.
Re the clutch, my indie won't quote on the cost of a replacement as apparently they can be a b
h to replace courtesy of the heat from the turbo etc etc. Can easily be a 4-figure bill.Other than clutch, I'd have thought that the 944 T would be more expensive to run simply due to age. Mine never actually left me stranded but I spent almost £2k a year just keeping on top of standard stuff - brake lines, cam belt changes etc etc.

cam chain and camshafts problems can be costly on the 968. the 944 does not have uprated suspension and an lsd as standard. both were an option
All later turbos (Turbo S and 250's) had LSD - they also had bigger front brakes than the 968. 944 turbos had aircon - it may still be working. Not so many 968's had it.Edited by LarJammer on Wednesday 28th August 07:40
Uprated suspension is a moot point as all the original suspension will be worn out anyway...
I'd drive them both & see which you like best.
That's a very Sweeping statement Blade!!!!
The 944T is based on the older, simpler 8v engine, the earlier ones having forged cranks and other homologation parts for their Le Mans entry, the turbo is an old solid unit with much intelligence/trickery around it and there are quite a few indys that know their way around the plumbing
The 968s are known for having cam and chain issues which can cost around £2k to sort, twice as much as a new turbo on the 951, but the 951s will be 1-6 years older so longer for any rot to set in.
Other than that, the running gear is almost the same, with many 944Ts having 968 suspension parts retrofitted, and the interiors are the same - although all Ts had aircon, very few 968s did
Having had both I remember the 944T with much fondness and it is the one that my son has a picture of on his bedroom wall 'nuff said

It depends where you intend to use the car in my opinion, mainly city driving and pottering about and I'd go for a 968. A lot of Turbo's have had the boost turned up then been hammered into the ground without proper maintenance, and they aren't cheap to fix.
Very much this. The debate about the 944 S2 vs. 944 Turbo is pretty much the same question, and the answer is to try both and see which you like more. I have an S2 but have driven several turbos. Each time I drive one I think the same - "Lovely, but my S2 does me better than a turbo would."

That's more to do with the fact that 944's are very pretty and 968's are butt-ugly, isn't it fatty?

looks wise, the 968 wins for me easily.. love the front and rear styling, less fussy than the 944 and abit more retro as it reminds of the 928..
but im lured by the turbo of the 944, i used to own GTA turbo, skyline turbo etc, and i do like that turbo kick..
The 968 is a rarer sight, which i like
My plans for the car, occasional track days, and maybe try a drift day,, yes Drift!

They did do a 968 Turbo, but very rare, they used a 2.5 litre 8v block running 305bhp
This might be a compromise though:

An ideal compromise for me would be a 968 with a fresh 250PS turbo engine. The 968 Turbo S was actually a 3.0l - 2.7l/3.0l block with an 8v (2.7l type with sodium filled ex. valves) cylinder head.
Forced induction 16v (944/968) motors seldom work and two valves per cylinder are enough with a turbocharger, so this would be my choice (original 2.5l, not 2.7l hybrid) because you know that it will work and prove to be durable.
