Have been spending time with a new Boxster, wasn't expecting much as didn't really like the 987 version.

Most would agree the car is a looker however I was quite surprised at how little respect the car gets on the road so many cars tailgating, not giving way, being cut up was given the finger a few times but think that was more related to the noisebiggrin Which to be honest I wasn't expecting at all. The car is non S pdk with no PSE and the car sounds bloody gorgeous at WOT even better than my 997 C4S.1 with PSE!

The electronic steering was full of feel and did not feel compromised or artificial compared to the 997. The paddles are good but would not be unhappy with the buttons to me they were equally effective though this could be from experience with tiptronic cars.

The car is not very powerful but found for street driving it's quite enjoyable as you have to work much harder and use the full rev range to make the car move.

For a base model without PASM the car handles in a predicatable and fluent way not too much roll, perhaps at higher speed cornering there is too much movement and wouldn't want to push it too much in the wet on the road and at autobahn speed the front was slightly too light but again I am comparing to 4S's.

Brakes did the job but did need a fair push and could tell after a while of hard driving they were softening. Not sure if this car was designed for track and the Boxster S with bigger brakes would probably be the answer for the power/weight of car.

Inside love the new layout and quality was as good as I can remember, it is slightly small for me but PCM finally has postcode functionsmile Not even going to talk about the stop/start functionvomit My legs felt squashed and after a couple of hours were aching, the footwell seems small and the centre console pushes my left leg in slightly but for an average build should be fine.

Overall a very impressive product and would probably match my old 996 C4S in all but sound, not sure who the intended market is. Not really my type of car however driving a 991 C4S in 2 weeks so will see how it compares, really looking forward to hearing the PSE on the 991. All just my view and counting the seconds till I can do another London Meetbeer

The 2.7 with Pse sounds feral, there is a clip on YouTube which makes my hair stand on end.

How was the gearing, people have complained that the gearing is too tall for the engine?

a 997 has worse steering than a 981 Boxster !!!

this must be a typo, and you mean a 991 I guess,

even so the 981 has still lost loads of feel and cannot get anywhere near the feel you get from a 997 or a 987.

I think he was saying it's not lacking in feel when compared to a 997 rather than it's better than a 997.

Interesting write up Cal, I had a 991 C2 PDK for a week a few months ago and was blown away by it, it had no PASM, a few luxury options and the PSE. The exhaust is fantastic, driving it in Sport+ with the exhaust makes it feel like an entirely different car. The steering is noticeably different to the 997 but I wouldn't go so far as to call it bad, it's just lacks a bit of feedback.

I was very tempted by it, as an all rounder there aren't many cars that can match it.

Agree about the noise - borrowed a 2.7PDK and just couldn't resist changing down at every opportunity, particularly in tunnels.

O yes true , it's early lol, Still bks though lol as I think the steering sucks monkey balls on these new cars over the old cars. So I am not sure what people are seeing in them at all, but then I guess Audi sell a lot of cars which feel like that , so it must be the way forward !!!!

I borrowed one in May when my car went to the garage and I too was very surprised how much fun the car was to drive. Currently have a non S Caymen (manual!) outside for the day and I am just off for a drive. It's a lot of fun.

Been covered enough, but he steering on the new cars isn't that bad,on bad roads not fighting with the steering to get the car going where you want to go is quite an advantage wink

I agree - it is a whole lot of Internet/media fed bunckum. The 991 and 981 are nowhere near as numb as Audi's, just slightly less fidgety than their forebears. Is it progress, probably not, but its here to stay and won't be discussed at all in 2/3 years.

I found exactly the same when I first drove one. The first application of the brake pedal coming out of the opc nearly resulted in an emergency stop with very little pedal pressure.

Likewise - can't imagine that helps with heel n toe changes either - I haven't tried as any time I get one from my OPC it's a PDK model. As for the steering - it's not as talkative as the 987, but it's still got a good natural feel, and loads up well in my (very amateur) opinion. On the road the 2.7 981 felt damn near as quick as my Gen 1 987S and working that engine was no hardship at all.

In 2 to 3 years time they will have better systems, but atm they stink and worse than Audi imo.

The Boxster was better than the 991, the Cayman Better than the Boxster, the GT3 better than the Cayman (so they say).

They seem to be making very fast progress with electric steering, but a 991, Boxster and Cayman for sale today are not for me because if it, I have driven them and not impressed at all.

I am sure all the face lift cars will have it perfected.

That'll be the manual version, not the PDK.

Still far to high.

What does 3rd gear take you too, if you are going to be on a B road blat about 85mph.

If 2nd takes you to 70mph+ that leaves you in no mans land in 3rd gear on B roads .

Wouldn't say the brakes are bad but not like on 996/997(i.e hard feel, easy to modulate) and feels more like what you would get on Audi/BM etc...

Not better than 997 but don't feel short changed either. Only time it was a bit weird was when I did a quick lock and suddenly there was no weight.

Didn't really notice any real issue.

The PDK doesn't seem as urgent but was thinking this could be due to lack of torque or car does not have sport plus, but has sport button?

I'm quite shocked to say this but this Boxster is more fun than my previous 997 C4S.

Hi Callughan,

You said the 981 was a bit tight. Is that height wise or width wise? Are you abnormally tall or broad?biggrin

Can't speak for him, but I'm not fat or tall and found the centre console dug into my left leg a bit. That was a Cayman 981, but probably the same. Felt ok otherwise for me.
