My First 911

I am hoping to be in a position to finally buy myself a 911 in a couple of months from now, but am unsure which model makes most sense for someone new to the marque? Till now I have only owned BMW's really, so figured I would ask some advice.

My budget is likely to be between 12k and 14k. So what can I get for my money?

The best answer is to search on PH for that price range under "Porsche"

But trying to be a bit more helpful, your best bet these days at that price range is a 996 with RMS issue already fixed.

Until relatively recently an SC, 3.2 or 964 would all have been in budget but these days you'd be looking at a project car of some description at this price point, or be very lucky.

it is realistic for a decent, early 996. If you wanted an older car, £15k to £20k gets you in to SC, 3.2 or 964 territory.

What are you looking for from the car? Sunny weekend toy, everyday commuter, Euro-hoon?

If you want the "raw" feel of an older car then you'd be better off saving up for an SC/3.2 or 964.

If you want something which feels more like a modern car and can take daily use a 996 would be great.

In an ideal world I would like an earlier looking car, with a more recent engine and transmission. I like the look of the 70's & 80's cars but corrosion is my main concern.

I'd like something for weekends and occasional speed events.

I have't looked at mainland Europe prices recently but i don't think they are any cheaper than UK these days.

At the moment, UK prices seem quite a bit lower than on the continent. I sold my 1988 Carrera 3.2 (nearly top condition and below 70k miles) last year for 21k pound in the UK and am now looking at something comparable in Germany or France and here it seems I'll have to spend north of 40k euros to get close to what I had before.

Not yet, though I shall.

I'm thinking I may have to just save some more, as I think I would like either a 70's/80's model or later Carrera 2 given the choice.

No, it's actually coming from an accident I was in a few years back and am waiting on settlement. I don't plan on parting with the BM's either. They were bought cheap and improved upon over the years, so am pretty attached.

I have a friend who today told me he was selling his 2000 996 C2 in Arctic Silver, black leather, 40,000 miles. I think he's looking for around £13k.

Unfortunately, I'm still a couple of months off being in a position to look for specific cars. Thanks though. It's a shame as that sounds pretty much exactly what I'd be after.
