New Cayman S - sports exhaust - yes or no?

Have pretty much got my spec sorted but wondered if anyone on here has the Cayman S with the sports exhaust. Trying to work out if the SE is too much. OPC certainly wasn't pushing it as an option but I wasn't able to hear one with it and one with out it.

I had a test drive in a 981 Cayman S with PSE - it sounds fantastic but you need to drop the windows to get the best of it. I would spec it, but I don't think you'd be disappointed with the sound of the car without it as they've upped the noise compared to 987, even without PSE.

Had 987.1 cayman s with no sports exhaust. Nice sound but pretty quiet.

Sports exhaust on box spyder now is epic. Set to loud permanently.

9x7 PSE sounds pretty lame compared to the newer 9x1 versions. I wish my 997.2 sounded as nice as a 991 PSE.

There have been a couple of chaps saying they feel the 981 PSE drones too much. I think it's a pretty individual thing that some people are just not sensitive to.

Would you be sacrificing anything else to have it? I personally don't think the 981 cars need PSE as they sound great stock.

I'm inclined to agree with this.

I've been a big advocator of the PSE, but having had a PDK 981 Cayman for the day without PSE, I don't think you'd miss not having it.
In fact, it took me a while to realise it didn't have one, when I couldn't find the button to press.

It sounds superb without.

I did think the stock Cayman S sounded pretty good yesterday without PSE, but I tske on the board comments about those noises. I think all the video reviews I have watched of the Cayman S by Evo, Harris and Sutcliff are based on cars with the PSE specified and I do like what I hearing.

The last thing I want on the rare occasions when my missus is allowed in the car is her moaning about the noise, so does anyone know if the drone goes away when the PSE ia switched off?

Also, I bet you are all tired of this one, but should I go manual or PDK?

A sports exhaust is a must. IMO it adds so much grin to every road, and tunnels become your best friend =)

IMHO PSE a must, the PDK/Manual thing is a bit more tricky. Everybody on here has their own opinion, mostly well entrenched. I tried both and deliberated long and hard; the manual is just such a good box and more involving as everybody notes, thats about it. The PDK is also a superb box, can function as a manual albeit without the clutchy bit, is faster changing and more economical, but not as involving! I have an R32 as a DD with DSG and love it and chose PDK on the Boxster (because this will become the new DD) I think much depends on the type of driving you do. If it was not a DD and I was just taking the car out at weekends for a blast there would have been no dilemma, manual box. If it is a DD and 90% of the time you are mooching about in heavy traffic on not very interesting roads under Plods watchful eye I personally can't see the "involvement" in constantly changing gears and dipping clutches in the 0-50mph range. If you have any sort of reasonable trip computer on your current car have a look at your average speed over the last 500 miles or so, should give you a clear idea of what type of driving you are doing, you may be surprised.But that is just my opinion, bet someone has a different one.

On the Box S PDK... no it doesn't go away, i.e. it doesn't revert to the same as the stock exhaust.

It's at roughly 1800-2100 rpm in 7th under power, which is 65-75mph IIRC. So it could only bother you if you do a lot of motorway miles I think, holding that speed under gentle power. It might well be different on the non-S car as apparently that's more eager to drop to 6th under power, which might take the engine out of that band.

I havent driven the new Cayman yet so don't know if it would be more or less of an issue.

FWIW I think the stock sounds very good too.

Thanks for the post, your comments bear out my thinking and my experience on driving the PDK and manual cars back-to-back. The manual does have a great box as you say; for me this will be my weekend car with a short 20 minute daily commute to a train station during the week through some nice fast country roads. Long commutes will be rare on the whole.

I just found the manual car so much more exciting and engaging in the end. However, my feeling is that if the Cayman becomes any faster in the future, then PDK may well become the 'norm' as it has rapidly become for the 911.

I suppose manual or PDK with thesse cars you are a winner either way. so nice dilemma to have.
