Just had it in for its 2nd annual service and it now smokes quite badly for 3-4 seconds after starting from cold.
Not helped by the fact that I have not got the Owners manual yet so unsure about the oil level gauge reading on the dash-any ideas apart from the fact they may have over filled it?-was fine before hand in the month that I've owned it.

Cheers.

Have a read at this - somewhat normal

but it never happened to me EVERY time - only occasionally.

I would not be to worried. It does happen when you have driven it hard. It normally happens after a quick round on the track but it soon clears.

Oil level -must be checked on level ground with a hot engine ticking over, ideally with the fan cutting in on the oil cooler, then you know it is hot.

Double check on the dipstick, but don't forget to put the 710 cover back -it don't arf make a mess of the engine if you don't -doh!!

Mel that's for the Turbo (or GT3)the standard Carrera needs the engine to be switched off & shows under the rev counter on the pre-ignition key turn!

I'll think you'll find that Melv is correct. The engine should be running warm even with the Carrera. Both my aircooled 911's (1982 + 1997) have to checked this way the oil has to be circulating if you turn the engine off then it just runs down to the sump and you can not get an accurate reading.

The few seconds off smoking is more than likely just a little oil that seeped through as the engine cooled down from the last run. Not a problem if it is only a few seconds and probably happening after the service as they put the correct quantity of oil in at the time. You should keep a close eye on the levels - I get suprised how much my 993 uses sometimes. Use the dash gauge as guidance (it should be at 3 o'clock and don't forget it won't work when the engine is over idling revs) but check properly with the stick.

Just realised you may be talking about 996 in which case the above may not be the case but I'll leave it on.

NA or FI 911s may differ, not sure, but anywhichway this sounds like a bit of an overfill at the service. Nothing to worry about if so.

Silly me, I of course assumed he was talking about an air cooled 911. (Couldn't find a :slapselfaroundface:. so this will have to do!! )
