Spyder change or keep
Discussion
I have a Spyder and am constantly thinking about what to get next! But don't we all!
I have found the Spyder to be a superb car - great balance, feel and 'specialness'.
I think it's a future classic and will potentially appreciate, but it will take a very long time....especially if they make a 981 Spyder!

So it's that time again, three years coming to an end, warranty, mot and finance, what to do? Refiance,or may be change to new Boxster, Cayman. Are the new ones worth the extra cash?
Cayman RI would say go drive the new cars, they are nice cars, Audi also make nice cars, as do Merc and BMW.
what ever you buy (bar a Cayman R or a Plastic Lotus) it will not feel any where near as good and you will get through cars so fast trying to find that feel again.
The plus point is they are holding very nice values and it's much bigger brother has just done a 6.57 Ring lap.
I agree - we all like to change our cars / try something else for a change - but I have too often found that the grass is not always greener. And the new cars are definitely that bit less involving. Agree that the flagship model being a Spyder might help with the desirability of these.
I had to make this decision back in May. The easy modern solution is to get a new Boxster/Cayman - use the equity in your Spyder to prop up the next PCP and be in a lovely brand new car, to your personal spec with no additional deposit required and monthly payments staying the same - a free new car!
Not only that - the new car is under warranty for 3 years, comes with new tyres and brakes and won't need a service for 2 years - it's even cheaper!!
Despite the attraction, I kept my Spyder and don't regret the decision at all. I do like the new cars but I love the Spyder and as a second car, it suits me just fine for now. Residuals are holding up nicely, it still looks and drives well and I am far from bored with it.
I wouldn't change mine for a Cayman R but that's purely a personal decision.

I blow hot and cold.
One minute love the Spyder and wouldn't change it, next minute looking around for the next car.
Thing is, apart from a new Exige (which is too much £'s) I'm not sure what I actually like.
Wouldn't have a normal Boxster, as nice as the 981 is.
Only real contender in my price range would be the 981 Cayman, but.......
Maybe just a re-colour and refurb of the wheels - much cheaper than a new car!

You would need something special to replace the Spyder.
In my world new Cayman should be cheaper than new Boxster, like every other coupe compared to its sibling.
Price of options is also a complete piss take too. For the price of a new Fiat 500 you can upgrade the spec on a new Boxster to get features already standard on the Fiat 500 without a free car too!!

After an S2000, then an Elise 111R for nearly 7 years, my 1.5yrs with the Spyder has been ace. Trouble is those 911's. I need to scratch that itch one day, I think. Preferably a GT3. Although I can imagine getting one and then after a while wishing I had the Spyder back! Spyders will be collectors items one day, so reluctant to sell. But a manual 997 GT3 will be too. A mate had one when he lived in the US and then went looking for a Spyder! Plus I am a stickler for the engine in the 'right' place, and the balance that goes with it. Plus the light weight. I had a 981 Boxster as a courtesy car for 2 weeks. It was lovely. I only noticed the steering when I got back in to the Spyder. So much more alive.
Keep the Spyder. Definitely. Maybe.

Agree with you there Rob.They are great cars and a lot of car for the money, its just a little call from your dealer thats plants a seed and make you start thinking.Bloody good tactics when you come to think of it.

Had I changed, I would have gone for a "Spyder spec" 981S with sports suspension, bucket seats, paint to sample riviera blue (or maybe just white again) painted internal trim, red seatbelts etc.
Sometimes am still quite tempted!
but is it worth the £30k to change?a 981s less power and not as exclusive!thats a big fat NO.better off keeping the spyder and buying a shopping trolley for £10K!Sometimes am still quite tempted!
now if Porsche made a more powerful cayman(circa 380hp) then I might be tempted.a full fat r8 v10 spyder does sound tempting but what I like about the spyder as a second car is the cheap running costs(tax and insurance for me is under £600pa)
