Should I have a separate CD/DVD with European maps or does the unit use a single disk for everything

Only the one disc already in the unit.

Enter a European destination and it will direct you there..!

You use the map CD for the country you are visiting. All the disks have the Major Roads of Europe on them, so will guide you from the nearest main road to where you are.

Don't know never tried it! Takes me all my time to use it for UK destinations

996 and 997 are different.

996 (PCM2.0) is CD based, and there are 9 CDs in the current map set for Europe.

997 (PCM2.1) is DVD based, and has only one DVD covering the whole of Europe. Select the Country when you enter your destination.

I have the 997 pcm 2.1 system with DVD covering UK and europe.
