996 GT3 Mark 2 split coolant hose

Went to the Gaydon TIPEC show at the weekend and had the opportunity to go round the track which forms part of the complex, quite impressive.
After giving the car some beans for a 2 or 3 laps we then returned back to the show where i parked and turned off the car and started chatting to fellow enthusiasts/friends etc.
All of a sudden after approx 20-25 mins a coolant hose just gave way and the car let go of all its coolant.
Its the hose as you look down on the engine on the right hand side, there appears to be one exactly the same on the left too.
Having called out the RAC and relieved myself of £140 as i obviously had to join, the engineer removed the hose and there is what looks like an inch long slit in the side wall of the hose, just wondered if any fellow GT3 owners have had the same misfortune with theirs & if so is it just a case of the hose perishing or something else that may have caused the hose to split?

not a rare issue Ed, just be thankful it didn't happen on the move... just replace both sides with new parts & make sure all the coolant is replaced.

Fair enough i'll get a couple ordered, its the first time i've had a hose go on any of my 996's in the past.
I was just a bit worried that it might be something a bit more serious causing a pressure build up or something.

Hi,

Had same happen to mine a week after getting back from Spa!

6" long slit down one side. AA wanted to wrap it in a bandage to get me home!

Replaced various hoses now and have a full cars worth sat in a box ready to install when or if engine is ever removed.

Cheers Mike, where's the best place to get the hoses an OPC or a specialist such as design911 or somebody

Its worth considering a more durable hose i guess, like i say i have never had to do it before so my knowledge of hoses is somewhat limited to say the least.

Ed try Euro car parts for the hoses but I think they will only be available from OPC...?

Neil the hoses have special couplings that clip fit at either end which makes them unique unlike general Samco hosing.

Pop into the local OPC parts department and ask for some O's. Its an opportunity not to be missed.

Yeah i noticed that when he took the fiddly clips off, to be fair the RAC fella had a bit of a struggle getting it off. I'll make a few calls

More common issue is metal to metal joints giving way - they are glued together on GT3 and let go on both 996 and 997s.
Google is your friend.

On one of my rad hoses, the aluminium collar corroded, split and was weeping very slightly. The replacement's collar appeared to be made of steel (!)

Nasty happening, that. Whenever I travel I take a roll of duct tape and self amalgamating tape with me, that would fix it temporarily for a return to base (for less than £140 )

The hoses are right in where there's a lot of heat and just fail eventually. Its pretty common if you don't change them as a maintenance item.
If you ever have to take out your third brake light it will likely just crumble apart too, the heat from the engine gets to a lot of bits and pieces.
I do all the rear hoses on the Cups every year or so but the engines are in and out of them much more frequently and the hoses are easier to get at so appreciate its a much bigger deal to drop out a street cars engine and swap (especially psychologically).

As ade mentioned, having one go on the move dumps all your coolant onto your rear tyres. Not fun, its slippery stuff.

Mike do you know the part numbers of these hoses mate?
Going to get both the left and the right one replaced.
Looking at my cars history you have done quite a lot of work on it in the past.

Mine went at 120mph whilst driving in a straight line (luckily), the steam that came out of the back of the car as the hot coolant hit the exhaust was immense.

Very quick repair, replace and refill.

DIY very easy to get to
Hardest bit is removing the feckin clips that hold it on

Part number for the hose is 996.106.501.77

£25 plus 2 sealing rings at 22p each.

Mine went 5 miles short of Oulton Park in February, which was a proper pain as it was Saturday evening. I had to wait until Monday to get it fixed at Porsche Centre Chester.

Really common for them to pop at the 'ring, has killed one guy I know of (biker) & caused a fair few other serious injuries, folks who run GT3s at the 'ring without new hoses need a swift kick in the plums.
