Hello, to avoid it going on for ages and becoming pointless here is some background.
Am coming from a fast 4 door saloon with 2 kids (4yrs and 2yrs). The other car is an estate
Fancy a manual 997 but which one...
997 turbo looks like a good choice but is newer gen2 c2s the way go?
...gts??

Much appreciated!

simple answer get yourself a nice 2010/11 manual 997.2 s!
just to add if you can find one.imho(and some mags) the gts although special is not worth the premium you will pay as the standard c2s doesn't dissapoint

As always, you need to make a short list and then go and drive them before making a decision.

One mans' meat is definitely another mans' mustard when it comes to cars (especially Porsches) biggrin

All I can add is, if you want a very fast, compliant and practical all weather super-car, the 997 Turbo has to be right up there as a contender. Had mine 4 years now and still really loving it (this pic was taken yesterday while out on a run),

For around 40k now, it's an awful lot of car for the money IMO.

Reading on here though, you will soon realise it's a "Marmite" car....people seem to either love them (me) or hate them (everyone else !!) confused

The turbo was my first choice after driving one for the first time last weekend. Everything but the noise was awesome! I do keep coming to the newer c2s. But it seems as though the turbo in manual shouldn't lose as much vs other models??

I went 997 Gen 2 rather than Turbo. It's an individual thing. One day I'll try a PDK Turbo and see what I make of it. I suspect I'll stick with my NA car though.

I like the sound and the instant response. I've yet to feel the need for more power or torque, even in Europe. I think it's a good all rounder.

I thought the turbo was pretty responsive and the way it looks is awesome! But totally hear you on the gen2 c2s it could make the gen 1 turbo feel very dated in comparison... But the residuals of turbos seems little more bullet proof... I mean what are 996 turbos going for now? Isn't that always going to keep the 997 floored to come extent whereas the other models will blend in over time? I really don't know and don't want to offend but just wondering...

Driven both for extended periods and I'd personally go for a turbo every time.

Only other car in the price range I'd consider for your type of use is a GTR but I think the 997s rear seats are more useable and they're much cheaper to run too.

C2S gen 2 very good too though! Choices choices! If you were being sensible you'd for the C2S as it will cost less to run than turbo, sound much better and deliver 75% of the turbos performance. For me though turbo's performance is in another world!

You'll know which you prefer. I'm happy with my choice, but that doesn't mean it's the car for everyone else.

Residuals, I'll leave others to discuss that topic.

Having just made the switch from Gen1 into Gen2 I'm still reeling a little over how much better (pretty much) everything is?

My $0.02 (FWIW) is stick to Gen2, stretch to a Turbo if at all possible (yes, I know, not likely at £50k, but we all re-assess the budget when the *right* car comes along) and PDK is just awesome.

I've had my 2010 997.2 C2S for a week now and loving every minute. I found a very low mileage example (4500 miles) in showroom condition and it is all I need really - sure the Turbo is faster but where will I use the difference as I don't do track days? As it is I'll not exploit the potential of the C2S. For my needs, I quickly dismissed the 996 Turbo I briefly considered and focussed instead upon finding the perfect low mileage 997.2 - I was even looking for a standard Carrera as being fine performance-wise but the S makes better sense for future resale methinks.

I also went PDK with Sports Chrono Plus over my initial preference of Manual since it will hold value better and the Launch Control is hilarious. Sure, it takes away the challenge of getting a Manual car to launch well but it is still a lot of fun even if it does mean perfect launches every time.

Yes, lack of aural entertainment is the main gripe for most people (that and being "too fast for the road"). On the first point, yes I agree, they don't sound anywhere near as good as revving out a NA flat 6. But, 2nd gear....full boost.....on an enclosed section of road (between walls) and it sounds like a jet fighter (or a very angry Dyson) biggrin

Re the second point, I think this really depends on where you live. Luckily, there are plenty of roads in my area where you can still enjoy cars like this without being a menace to others. If I lived in a city however or somewhere miles from any decent driving roads, I could see how they could be deemed a bit pointless. Then again, would you buy a speedboat if you lived in a desert wink

Re depreciation....who knows ?? All we do know is you will probably lose money whatever you buy (unless you buy a classic like an air cooled or 996 GT3 / GT2). I wouldn't make this one of your main criteria....just drive a few cars and buy the one YOU like the best smile

I would buy a 997 GT3 but reading between the lines you are not looking for something that viceral and extreme?

997 turbo is a more logical choice, and probably faster on give and take roads more of the time.

I agree with MTR on this. Following my recent switch from a 996 Turbo to a 996 GT3 I would say that if you really enjoy driving where you are fully involved, a test drive in a GT3 could be worthwhile. I've never driven a 997 GT3, however if its a least as good as the 996 GT3 it would be awesome ad probably in your price range.

If you can get into a GTS at that money go for it. Best daily driver I've ever had!

Avoid anything Gen1, except GT2/3 and Turbo, because of Carrera Gen1 engines. GTS is a logical choice (5stud wheel pref), but if it's a weekend toy £50k on a Gen1 997 GT3 would be a very safe place to put your money...buy between now and Dec for best price on GT3s. Some nice examples for sale and prices are certainly holding at current values.

Nice position to be in!

Ive just been through the same dilemma with a similar budget. A 997.1 C2 has been my much loved daily drive for the past 3 years. A 997.2 C2S was always the on paper favourite, more than fast enough, modern, cheaper to run etc, a test drive did nothing to diminish that view. Then I test drove a gen 1 manual turbo...wow...pick it up next weekend.
