Boxster (986) dashboard crazieness

My 1999 2.5 had a hissy fit today, anyone able to tell what has gone wrong and give me a solution, please?
It started with the digital speed readout/clock/odometer all going blank, after stopping and re starting all was fine. Shortly , about an hour later, whilst driving the rev counter began to hunt wildly up and down, totally out of sinc with the engine speed, the analogue speedo also failed at this point. Stopping and restarting seemed to resolve the issues but after another ten minutes or so the dash failed completely, so I now only have warning lights on start up and then nothing else.
I have taken the dash out and all the multi pin connectors are firmly in place and locked. No bent pins or moisture. I have now disconnected the battery to leave it overnight, but am worried it might not be the simple cure I am hoping for.
Any ideas? or solutions??
