"My first Porsche"

OK, i'm not actually going to do a story about it, but just wanted to say hi as I picked up my first Porker over the weekend, a Gen 1 Cayman S, and after my first proper drive in it this morning I'm very impressed! The handling and chassis setup is absolutely superb, and I love the PASM suspension, as in normal mode it really smoothes out a lot of our terrible road suraces - even with the 19" alloys fitted.

The engine is also very impressive, really really strong with plenty of power throughout the rev range. It is an indecently fast point-to-point car cross country, I genuinely cannot think of much that would keep up with it on twisty A and B roads.

I do a decent amount of miles, so am looking to swap the 19's for some 18" wheels. Firstly, to smooth out the ride further and secondly as I will need winter tyres and 4x winter tyres will be cheaper in 18" size than they will in 19"! So, if anyone fancies a part-ex against my 19" Carrera S wheels let me know.

On that note, will any Boxster (986/987, Gen 1/Gen 2) or Cayman (987 Gen 1/Gen 2) wheels fit?

Other than that, I plan to upgrade the stereo with a touchscreen job that will allow iPod input and bluetooth connectivity, and will also upgrade the slightly woeful speakers at the same time.

Anyway, very impressed so far and looking forward to getting some more miles under its' belt!!

You need 987 wheels (Boxster or Cayman) with the correct offsets (986s are different as are 996s). I don't have them to hand by they are listed in the back of the handbook.

Welcome to Cayman ownership. I too have a gen 1 CS on 19's with PASM.

If you plan on fitting winter tyres you will need to drop to 18's and the correct tyre sizes are:

Front 235/40

Rear 255/40.

I have a seperate set of 18's for my winter tyres which I find much more convenient than swopping around every year, but whatever you decide, the winters are definately worth the money.

Trev - why do you need 18's for winter tyres? Can you not get 19" winter tyres?

I think some 19s are available as winter tyres, but the low profile needed isn't ideal for snow etc. so I think most people run 18s or even 17s for winter tyres - that was certainly the case when I lived in Munich, where it can REALLY snow come January or so.
