Over rev + Porsche warranty
Discussion
Off to look at a GT3 RS tomorrow - car is at an OPC
Dealer has just rung to inform me that the car has over revs in ranges 5 & 6 - about 160hrs ago. Quite impressed that he's being proactive about telling me knowing I've got quite a trip to go and see the car but...
Now I don't want to start the whole "what's an over rev" discussion again, but given that these are top end what checks would you want to see proof of - I was of the assumption that Porsche wouldn't touch cars with this level of over rev on them

If they are willing to put a warranty on it wouldn't worry me too much I don't think - on the understanding they will renew that same warranty in two years' time. And I'd want that in writing, ideally not from the OPC, but from the underwriter/Porsche GB.
Perhaps they've already done a compression test, or intend to do one?

I'd personally buy another car.
Some are of the opinion that it's ok to buy cars with RR3 and RR4+, personally I wouldn't want to expose myself to future potential problems (engine and or warranty related).
I know some motor industry employees have a different view, and I respect their opinion. Please post evidence of Porsche supplying a new engine on a 997 GT3 with RR5/6 and please guarantee in writing in case of any future engine problem regardless of cause that you guarantee that Porsche will replace the engine under warranty. No one on this planet will confirm the above - and this is what I would want in writing from Porsche before buying, so I advise to just get another car. I'd be comfortable with RR1 and RR2 on a 997 GT3 or GT3 RS. You realise that the rev range is MUCH higher on GT3s, and RR5/6 is well into 5 figures?
RR5 is 10,000rpm - 11,000rpm
RR6 is 11,000rpm+
Your call.

Even though the engine has been given a clean bill of health, is demonstrably unaffected by the over-rev and Porsche will warranty it the general opinion on here is to walk away from the car?
I'd buy it, but I'd want the price to reflect the difficulty you'll have in selling it thanks to the internet. All of this will be irrelevant when the car's 9 years old anyway, so just buy it as a keeper.

You would need it IN WRITING from the WARRANTY COMPANY (not the OPC) that they will replace the engine if it breaks.I'd buy it, but I'd want the price to reflect the difficulty you'll have in selling it thanks to the internet. 160 hours is a long time ago, so if it's all checked (leakage test, timing chain deflection/stretch) now and OK then there should be nothing to worry about - but agree about getting the warranty documented correctly from the right source. If it was only a few hours ago then it would be a much greater cause for concern.
I'm also curious - does anyone have a definitive rev range list for 997 GT3's (it'll be different to Carreras)? As in, one produced by Porsche?
Don't forget, whatever incident/incidences caused this RR5 & RR6 would only have shown as a RR2 on a 996 and if you discounted every 996 GT3 with any of those at all you'd have a very short list.

not really. none of the 996 GT3 I looked at or the one I owned had any revs in range 2.I'm also curious - does anyone have a definitive rev range list for 997 GT3's (it'll be different to Carreras)? As in, one produced by Porsche?

On the plus side it happened a few k miles ago, on the minus side a foray into 6 means you've no idea what revs it reached.
If OPC warrant it, it means they will have gone through various tests, and I would have thought that if there was any damage to the engine it would have manifest itself by now?
How long did it spend in RR6?
