Cayman and Michelin PS2 (n2) wear rates.

On my '06 Cayman S :

Rears around 10k
Fronts have currently done 13k and are down to around 2-3 mm

I guess it depends a lot on driving style / journey type. Mine is mainly town driving but with lots of roundabouts, have also done a few long trips and some mountain passes.

To be honest I thought the fronts would last longer, maybe I need to slow down more for all those roundabouts!

Mine are PS2 N2, I had N1 to start with but they had a puncture so not sure how long they would have lasted. Maybe the N2 are softer?

N2's on the front of my Boxster, so far covered nearly 19k & have about 3 mm left on them. The rears were new when I bought the car, done about 7k ish & are down to 5mm. I don't drive it particularly hard & most journeys are motorway or a road.

I've got PS2 N4s on my 987S and am surprised at the high wear rate after running PS2s on a BMW 330Ci. After 6k miles (quite a bit of it being dual carriageway driving) the rears are just over 5mm and the fronts approx 6mm. They do seem to wear faster than the ContiSport 3s they replaced and after a couple of thousand miles I was alarmed at the wear rate, although if anything it seems to slowed down (probably subconscious I know). Good tyres though but shame Supersports aren't available in 235/40/18 otherwise I'd switch from PS2 to them next time round.

On that basis, given that they have approx 8mm of tread when new, you should get around 14K from the rears and 18K from the fronts. Thats hardly a high wear rate.

Agreed it's not proving to be as high as it was looking a few thousand miles ago, although the fronts lasted 40k+ in the 330 even with a big engine lump up front. I was expecting the fronts on the Boxster to wear at half the rate of the rears so in that respect they're wearing a bit quicker than expected. Very good tyre though so no regrets about buying them.

I did about 4k miles with the Contis and virtually no measurable wear during that time although I did find the grip was pretty poor even in the dry with 3-3.5 mm tread on the rears. Within a thousand or so miles of fitting the PS2s there was measurable wear but as you say if I can get circa 14k miles from the rears that's ok.

i've already gone through 2 sets of rears and 1 set of fronts since picking up an 06 car 16k miles ago... it had 4mm when I first bought it and it looks like the rears are shot after about 10k miles... no track days either...

I ran my Cayman for a year, 10k miles, rears shot, fronts about 2/3rds worn.It was brand new fitted with michelin ps2

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 seems to be getting some rave reviews (but not sure if they do them in an older Porsche fitment - although they are on 19" shod 991's and 981's); otherwise there are Michelin Pilot Supersports if you don't need the N rating for the warranty?

I see to recall that Kushy (member on here) has had them on his Spyder and has done very high miles in the car so could be worth contacting him to see what sort of wear he's been getting.

G E F1 A2 are N rated for 19" wheels for 981S, which is what was fitted on my 981S.

My PS2 N4s are 235/40/18 and 265/40/18

No mention of Pirelli, how do these stack up in comparison? Wear rates, noise etc... I am thinking of switching to Michelin, but Pirellis on at the minute, so would mean changing all 4 instead of two.

Pzeros were terrible on our Jag XF - suffered a blow out from one and the tyres were cracking inbetween the tread blocks after 12 months. The wear rate was also very high - rears were down to 3mm in 8k miles whereas Dunlop SP01 and Vredestein Wintracs on the same car wore at a lot slower rate. Even the fronts were completely worn out at 16k miles.

FWIW I used to get around 15-16,000 miles out of a set of Michelin PS2s or Bridgestone RE050s on my 997 C4S. Rears were normally slightly more worn than the fronts, but not considerably so, and hence I normally used to change all 4 at the same time.

I have Goodyears on my Spyder done 10000 miles and rears are down to wear bars so need replacing, fronts are about 3 -4 mm so will probably leave for a bit. Looking at previous threads was thinking of fitting PS2,s to the rear. I do 3k a year inc 3 or 4 track days. Now do I change all 4 to PS2's or just rears or stick with the Goodyears? Any advice please as I don't have a clue!

PS the Goodyears have been good but I do not know if the PS2's would bed better for my use. I know when I went from standard road tyres to Yoko AO48's on my Caterham the difference was massive so I want to make sure I get it right. Car is still under warranty so don't want to void this!
