Out for a run today in my 2002 Carrera suddenly the temp gauge stopped working and the temp light started flashing, and indicator failure came on on the display. The engine temp seems ok, the car is running perfect, would it be a temp sensor? The same sort of thing happened when the oil pressure sensor went.
As you describe it as sudden then it probably is an electrical failure of some kind - get it connected to a Porsche diagnostic machine as soon as possible. If you had an over-heating problem the gauge would have steadily risen until it got to the end of the scale.
The other thing you can do which may get a different, and more accurate reading, is to press the right hand upper most and lowest buttons on the climate control for about 5-10 seconds, until the display changes - the left side will show either a reading or a "c" code - you want 6c.
The right hand "centre vent" button will toggle between which reading is being displayed and the actual value, the + and - on the left of the control will move up and down the various readings that can be displayed. So, if it shows 1c, press the + button until it says 6c, then press the centre vent button and the engine coolant temperature will be displayed in degrees C. The cooling fans should cut in around 108-109 degrees, if it keeps going past this then either drive it a bit to get some airflow and reduce the temperature or just turn it straight off.
You get out of the hidden menu and readings simply by pressing auto.
