Having a hoon, straight road, no risk of losing traction, manual transmission, 2nd gear just selected...

Do you push the accelerator instantaneously (as physically possible) right to the floor and let the car 'catch up' and accelerate through the rev range

Or

Do you still apply the pressure to the accelerator progressively?

I would say;

Carburettors - Progressive
Modern ECU controlled Fuel injection - Floor

You have to experiment. My VW Golf TDi if I floored the gas, err fuel pedal would not accelerate as smartly as when I progressively applied the throttle as the engine gained RPMs. (I think this is done to limit the amount of soot the diesel engine generates.)

I have not noticed this behavior in my '02 Boxster and '03 Turbo, but newer cars might have some e-Gas program that limits how quickly the butterfly valve can open when the throttle is suddenly mashed to the floor.

Experiment to find out which technique works the best.

Why aren't you flat shifting? No need to worry about how to press it if you haven't lifted wink

Suggest you practice flat-shifting in a hire car. I learnt the art of flat-shifting in a diesel Vauxhall Corsa - Horrid car which lapped up the punishment :-)

Thanks guys.

My friend believes in his S5 that if he progressively applies the power the car "feels" quicker than if just plants his foot to the floor.

My point was that if you didn't see the TC light flash, then whilst it might "feel" quicker I'm not sure it was...

I'll have to check out what on earth flat shifting is!!!

Try not to try it going down the 'box, it will not end well for you, only up and then only in hire and race cars.

I was always taught from a very early age:- “The accelerator pedal is not digital, it is not an on/off switch. It is analogue and should be treated as such.”

Getting into this habit is also quite a good idea IMO if you are jumping in and out of cars like 60bhp Golfs into 321bhp BMW’s on a regular basis.

I have found that even when I nail it I am not usually using all of the throttle and there is a little bit more available, maybe I should move my seat forward smile

This gives me an image of Jackie Stewart on the start line not being able to put his foot on the gas pedal!

Jackie did indeed say that but then Senna came along and proved its possible to go faster by jabbing on and off the throttle like a maniac*

Indeed but Mr Senna's way needs a lot more talent than blokes like me have. biggrin I struggle to even follow Jackie's rules, as evidenced recently at the first chicane at Castle Combe....I got back on the throttle too soon, thought I was going too quickly, instinctively touched the brake, forgot I had some lock on at the time and spent the next couple of seconds sorting out the mess that followed hehe

The late, great, Gerry Marshall also employed the stabbing throttle technique.Think of it a like a human traction control, planting the throttle and then letting off and stabbing it again just as the rear is letting go/gripping. Needs huge talent to master. I'll stick to trying to hit the gas at the right time and the right amount.
