997 Turbo as a Daily Driver - Yay or Nay !!?
Discussion
I work pretty local to home so not a long drive to work however it will be used on longer runs at the weekend
I'm the kind of guy to buy a car and use it rather than park it in the garage for use as a weekend car and hence my question around how it would be to live with on a day to day basis.

Understand.

It would be great as a DD, and then much better at the weekends

Just had a cracking weekend blat around North Wales with mine (apologies for posting this pic again as already used it in another thread)...
Really, 997 T is a great "all-rounder" IMO
I use mine as a DD - absolutely brilliant. Had 2 911s before and this one is my favourite. You can drive it 'normally' and it's no effort. However if you want to press on you sure can!
It even encourages me to get to work early so I can 'use' it on quieter roads!
A lot of car for the money....

They work as a DD but it depends what traffic you encounter regularly. Mine gets me to work but it does feel a bit like a hammer to crack a nut. I have a bit of open road but the last half is in usual morning traffic, nothing to dreadful but stop start all the same.
Perish the thought but a tip would probably be the best option.
If its all open road great but if not perhaps not the best solution or use of that solution as you are putting the miles and the wear on the car but not getting much in return as you can only use a fraction of its ability.
I might be inclined to buy a daily for 5k and have a 996t instead (or a gt3) for the weekend.

For town driving I would prefer a PDK Boxster/Cayman.
Turbo is at its best doing the intercity/grand touring thing and not for speed bumps or tight urban driving.
Suspension is a bit naff for town driving and power delivery a bit too peaky.
A Gen1 Manual or Tip would get on my tits around town.

Not good for speed bumps? Tight urban driving? Naff suspension? Peaky power delivery?
Are we talking about a 997 Turbo?

Yep.
I thread in and around Bromley in rush hour in mine, narrow streets and speed bump city. One road has 8 speed bumps and it makes the Turbo wince although, the aerokit don't help. The Turbo is a heavy industrial piece of kit and not really suited.
My boxster was lighter on its feet, went over and absorbed bumps far better and was smaller to boot. The whole urban commute thing is not the Turbo's forte.
Some peeps above are talking about A-road or motorway runs and not british urban town driving.

Speed bumps aren't really a problem for my (non aero-kitted) Turbo, steep driveways and inclines can be though.
Tight urban driving in a car the same size as a Ford Focus?

Naff suspension? C'mon, I've never once in 4.5 years of ownership thought the suspension was 'naff'. Yes, too hard in Sport mode for street driving, but in 'normal' mode is great.

Peaky power delivery? Are you talking about the kick up the 'arris between 1500-6000 RPM?

Maybe you own a dog and should try another one.
My 996 Turbo is ok around town but it has its negatives.
For one the Turbo has a very low nose and I have to ease in to and out of driveways to avoid tearing the thing off (at over $350 to replace one wants to make this last as long as possible).
Gas mileage around town is terrible. 15mpg with a lot of town driving.
The Turbo shifting is a bit ponderous. Nothing gruesome but compared to my other car it is not a fast shifter.
For around town I prefer the Boxster. Much lighter on its tires and ground clearance is better, and gas mileage is better, around 20mph under the same conditions. The 5-speed shifts so much faster than the 6-speed in the Turbo. (And the Turbo has the improved 997 shifter.)
The only negative is the Boxster's view out is not a good as the Turbo's. But I can live with it.
The bottom line as far as I'm concerned is the Turbo really prefers the open road more than tootling 'round town. I mean it is better than walking or taking the bus but I'm glad I have two cars.
