Please can anyone answer me:

1. Does a Cayman R with PDK have launch control and sport plus setting?

2. Are there any noted bhp improvements available at sensible cost

3. If I looked at a car without sports exhaust, is there a good aftermarket alternative (still compliant with most track day noise requirements)

4. Does the standard Cayman R have any adjustable damper settings (for the occasional sprint)?

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. I am considering PDK because it would be a bit quicker than manual. I currently sprint a 968CS (with I believe 275 bhp) and am less than 1 second away from the guy who wins the class in a 996 GT3. I would love to find a standard car that will take the fight a little closer to him and a PDK Cayman R might just do it - it will certainly help me lose so many runs due to changing gear from 2nd to 5th !!!

1. You need Sport Chrono for launch control in conjunction with PDK.

2. Define sensible. You can add another 20-30 but it's not going to make a tremendous difference.

3. Fabspeed and Akropovic but I think PSE is great. Are you looking for performance gains or improving the sound?

4. No. But you can replace the dampers if you wanted to, there are several alternatives.

is that the same 996 who is winning the hill climbs ?

would PDK be the right choice for sprinting ?

you need to be finding a Cayman with none of the weight added back in for sprinting imo
as most sprints are below 90mph, less weight is the key to going faster.

I would say a Spyder would be a much faster sprint car, less weight and lower C of G

PDK is just adding weight and is not that fast on the down shifts from 4th to 2nd as an example.
the SS kit for the R or the Spyder is very sweet and very fast.

I don't know if he does hillclimbs. It is a red 03 GT3 - the ex Reading press car. The driver is called Bill.

I haven't looked at the Spyder, partly because I have just bought a 981 Boxster which sorts out my convertible needs. If I went for the Cayman R then I would sell my 968CS and my Caterham R500. The Cayman would be used for track days and sprints. Interesting what you say about gear change times on the R. I certainly agree with what you say about the weight although I would probably want some of the comfort like air con, Nav etc just for resale and comfort when on the road.

PDK type boxes will be significantly quicker on a like for like car imho as the manual will lose a half second every gear change whilst the PDK just shifts through with barely a blip? I prefer manual so avoid them for that reason alone.

1/2 a second every gear change. :-o

not quite that much .

going up the gears you gain about 2/10th.

coming down less so esp if you are changing back to the same line of gears as fast down shift can catch it out.

as hill climbs and sprints are lower speeds weight brings in a factor and the PDK weighs 25kgs
so out the tighter bends the car will be slower due to the extra weight it has to move.
even more so on a hill climb where you have to lug the weight up hill also.

it's a fine line but not as clear cut as some make out.

I don't have access to the latest 5th gear but I thought Plato just lapped faster in a manual 981 Boxster over the PDK.

Half a second really isn't that long re a manual gear change wink I'm only going on the basis of some 30-130 days I attended, the acceleration traces were available for all to see; the manual cars clearly "flatlined" during the gear change whilst the PDK type cars had no discernible dip in acceleration through to their max speed.

I have plenty of vbox files thanks :-)

if it takes these guys 0.5 seconds they need to by a DSK or a PDK car :-) esp 3rd to 4th

as I said about 2/10th gain with PDK, but on a hill climb you might get that back in weight saving.
and on a sprint you might not even change gear that much so then you are just carrying weight for no reason.

drag racings not my thing, but yes 30-130 events and the like PDK is way faster, may be by 1 full second.
(unless you flat shift of course)
I did go to the 30-130 event about 3 years back , boy it was dull. (and uphill so also pointless to get any nice time to speak of)

Lower than what?

I'll grant you that hillclimbs generally involve lower speeds than sprints due to the nature of the courses, but if you think sprints are slow you should come along and see some of the ones I compete in.

Its all relative, however. If you are driving a Nicholson Mclaren engined Gould on the hills then its going to be anything but slow.

Well, I sprinted the 968CS yesterday and got closer to the GT3's than ever before but only came 3rd where I have previously had a 2nd in class. However, I was only 17/100ths off the winning 996 GT3 and only 8/100ths off the 2nd place 996 GT3RS. My last outing saw me 8/10ths off the leader.

So, I am still considering the Cayman R - just need to find the right car (PDK, Sports Chrono Plus, Bucket Seats, Sports Exhaust).
