Rev range glitch?
Discussion
Afternoon - everyones favourite Porsche subject i'm afraid - rev ranges.
My car is at OPC today for its 111 point check for the warranty renewal, the DME reading is showing into rev range 3 and they want 500 quid to do a compression test before they'll put the warranty on............i wouldn't have a problem with this apart from this is the reading.....
rev range 1 - 876 @ 818.9 hours
rev range 2 - 1 @ 749.9 hours
rev range 3 - 1 @ 749.9 hours
4, 5 and 6 all show zero.
car has 1400 hours on now.
As I understand it it would be just about this side of possible to get one ignition in rev range 3 (the odds / time are pretty narrow) - but on its way too and from the 3 limit the car would be reading way more than one - and its therefore a glitch?
they are telling me the compression test on RR3 is Porsche policy as of March this year - as 750 hours operating is likely before i bought the car.
Opinions appreciated.......

for 1 it's not possible to get a reading of 1 so people say. so must be a glitch.
for 2 when has RR3 been a warranty issue ? (I see March 2013) it's getting a piss take esp if you bought it from a OPC with those readings and now they won't stand by a car they have sold you !
I know 4 was an issue but this is getting joke even more so that it seems yours is an error.

I'd tell them that you'll agree to a compression test if...
1. You can time the labour they put in to check it comes to 500 at normal rates
2. They can explain to you to your satisfaction (that can be checked by an independent expert) how the ecu records one ignition in each of rev ranges 2 and 3
3. They can explain to you to your satisfaction (given they've done 2 above), how they are likely to find a fault some 20k miles after the event.
If they can't tell them to take a running jump!

Well, if you want the warranty then you'll have to pay for the compression test. It is total BS in my opinion. Those "1" over revs are bogus numbers, well, not bogus but probably part of the algorithm Porsche uses to keep track of over revs and to know if the counters have been tampered with.My car is at OPC today for its 111 point check for the warranty renewal, the DME reading is showing into rev range 3 and they want 500 quid to do a compression test before they'll put the warranty on............i wouldn't have a problem with this apart from this is the reading.....

I'd really like to see the letter from Porsche that states this policy, just exactly what it says.
In fact you might use this: Say you're ok with the money but you want to see something official from Porsche first. Also, before call Porsche of GB and speak with a customer rep and see what you can learn before hand about this policy. What you want if possible is something official from Porsche.
My belief is if the "1" over rev numbers are bogus, an artifact of the method used to detect possible tampering of these counters, it is fraud to require someone to pay for a compression test to verify there is nothing currently wrong with the engine when the over rev counters do not report actual over revs.
Well the Question is really, do you want extended warranty ?
always worth a chat with the OPC about price
'Fraid they have you over a barrel, best get the Vaseline out.
I have now left Pcar's, because of this ECU interrogation.

Don't accept it! Tell them to escalate it with Germany. They didn't charge for mine even though it had readings in 4,5 and 6 - albeit 1 in each! It was obviously a glitch and Germany accepted it as such and no leak down test was demanded or carried out before warranty renewal.
As far as I'm aware for the Porsche warranty:1) Readings in range 3 do now require further investigation before a warranty can be out onto the car
2) Single readings in a range are acknowledged as computer glitches and can be ignored for the purposes of 1) above!
It's a glitch. How can it record 1 in RR2 if it's been up to RR3? There would have to be a minimum of 2 in RR2, as it comes back down through RR2.
Insist they speak to Germany as suggested. Ask them to explain the obvious error of a single ignition in RR2. It's horses
t. It should end there.
They don't have you over a barrel at all! If you were uninformed maybe, but single readings are b
ks.

They initially refused a warranty claim I had due to an alleged RR 3 so they mean business on RR3 upwards nowadays. Its got to the point where you can't drive the car and hit the limiter. Either that or change marque.
A real disgrace - customers should go to different brands, daylight robbery.sidicks said:
I knew I'd read this somewhere - can you copy the letter and post on the forum?!

I have recent experience of spurious readings and have it in writing from porsche that they deem them implausible
I read the thread you supplied a link to.Interesting.
My thoughts are that if Porsche admits some readings are spurious, implausible, then I would have to question the whole mechanism by which the over revs are recognized and logged.
My thinking is that none of the numbers then can be trusted. And given customers have been denied warranty or good will work based on these numbers really opens up a can of worms.
Well to close this out - finally the OPC have decided that the readings are a glitch and i now have a shiny new warranty. I wont mention the OPC the work was done at this time - but Duncan Ince at Swindon was pivotal in getting this through (thats where the car was originally put up for sale used - although I didn't buy it through that OPC)
As said above, it is a little worrying that this system that glitches, can be used to deny many thousands of pounds of warranty work.........

The question is, are they incompetent or just trying it on?As said above, it is a little worrying that this system that glitches, can be used to deny many thousands of pounds of warranty work.........
Neither is good, but it would be useful to know!
