is a porsche the way to go
Discussion
Hi chaps. I have been looking at porsches for a few weeks now.i owned a 911 turbo back in 82 when I lived in germany.and found the car a love hate experience. Question is our todays uk roads the place for a porsche.i have worries that it will turn out to be an expensive night mare.i would like to hear from owners who use their cars rain or shin as their dd.not interested in the views of sunny days only owners or ones who only cover less then 10, 000 miles per year.i am looking at a gen11 cayman.michael
You'll be just fine. I drove my 991 every day, and parked it out on the street in London overnight. Nobody blinked an eyelid. Some people will envy you - but that's impossible to avoid when you buy a nice car, regardless of the brand. I found the 991 to be positively discreet compared to the attention my R8 got back in 2008/9. Go for it, and enjoy.
I've had three Porsches from new. Gen 1 987 Boxster 2.7 covered 85,000 in 3 years, Gen 2 987 Cayman 2.9 covered 80,000 in 3 years...and now a 981 Cayman 2.7..which has currently 15,000 since April.
Best cars I've ever owned. Less trouble than any of the BMW's or Audis.
I think these cars thrive on being used regularly.
No need for the bigger engine models....these are plenty enough fun on UK roads.

I drive a 997.2 every day too. My suggestion would be try to get one with PASM - it's useful over potholed B-roads, and try to avoid Bridgestone tyres as their sidewalls are tough and also not so good on our B-roads. I had a BMW 335i before and it used crash and bang over potholes. The 911 with PASM is so much better. Go for it!
Hi chaps, I took a 2013 cayman out today for a test drive.the dealer only wanted me to take it on the motorway, which it did very well.but on the much more normal pot holded roads of avonmouth I found the car hard going.i was also worried about the price of the extended porsche warranty. If they don, t go bang why would I need to spend 1500 pounds pa to warranty their products.as the bmw dealer was next door, I took some time out to test drive a 5 series converable 330d m sport they had.ok not much go as the cayman from a standing start, and the ride was much the same around avonmouth due to the run flats, the driving position was ok, not so good as the carman but not bad, the electric seats helped out.for a diesel it went very well, and the tin roof folding away was a work of art.so here we have it.porsch cayman, a more lighter car to drive, with a bit more speed, but with the down side of expence.or the 330d, not slow, more space, can always replace the run flats for better rubber.less expence day today, no need for over the top warranties, less money to buy.
I am going to leave it a bit and then redrive both cars on other roads and see how I feel. Michael

Hi chaps, I cover around 20 to 25, 000 miles per year. Mainly outside of the uk, so ride quality is a high factor.belgium roads make ours look new and much the same can be said about italian ones to.if a diesel can give as much fun as a petrol then I will look at diesels, and they did not have a twin turbo at hand, and it was just a look see.the cayman did not adaptive suspension, so that is something to look out for.but at the moment my worry is if the porsche wil be able to cover the miles I do without becoming a money bit, if I buy new within two years I will need to resale as if I keep it a 3rd the mileage would be to high for private buyers and if I was to keep it, then I would need the porsche warranty at extra cost.this would be on a car which I would get next to nothing on if I tryed to sale it.that makes for very expensive motoring in three years.with the bmw costing less to start with the figures work out better, but I need to also factor in the injoyment.at the moment my heart is saying porsche, my brainand wallet bmw.time will tale.michael
If you consider that a Gen 2 Cayman will be on a 2 year or 20,000 mile service routine. Therefore only costs are petrol and rubber, As said, if it is being used every day, reliability should be good. With respect to the ride, I think that is a personal thing The Cayman is a great car, have owned ours 1 year now and still love it.. A much better driving experience than any BMW.

Check if the Cayman was fitted with PASM. If it wasn't then try one with PASM before you make your mind up.
PASM is quite amazing at flattening out s
tty roads, then tautening up on good ones. My Boxster is pre-PASM and can feel a tad harsh on crap surfaces...
I've got PASM in my 997.2 C2S but I never use it as it makes the ride far harsher and uncomfortable on anything but perfectly smooth roads. PASM is quite amazing at flattening out s

Wow! I test drove a 987S fitted with it. Drove down the same crappy road I'd been on in my 986S and it was a totally different experience. I'm quite surprised by your comment, therefore. But there you go...you've lived with the system for a while, I only test drove it...Don said:

PASM is on all the time. If you press the button it just makes it firmer.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
