997 Gen 1 driver side window problems

Hey fellas

i'm new to the forum and appreciate any help or recommendations you can throw my way.

I have had my Gen 1 997 for a little over a year now, around six months ago i started to notice that every time i pulled the driver side door handle (from the outside)that the glass doesn't drop quickly enough and catches on the top of the car causing a horrible vibration as the window wobbles back and forth.

I can avoid the catch if i take hold of the handle before actually pulling the door open although every now and again it still catches.

Anyone else here had this problem and know how to overcome it?....thanks in advance

Welcome! Have you had a flat or disconnected battery at some time? Try and reprogramm the window motor (lower window, dissconnect battery, reconnect & run the window against the stop once - see manual!)and see if that helps for starters!

I haven't personally had a disconnected or flat battery although i understand that the car had a replacement battery before i brought it.

My experience with my cars is if the window is slow to react to the handle, goes down slowly, or doesn't move smoothly, that's a window regulator problem. For window regulator read the mechanism that is responsible for raising/lowering the window.

If the window doesn't drop when either the inside or outside handle is pulled that's a handle switch.

If the window drops but then goes up once the door is open and the handle is released that's a door latch.

If the window drops when either handle is pulled but then goes up once the door is open and the handle is released that's a door lock assembly problem.

If i hold the handle and take up the tension before pulling then the window drops in time enabling me to open the door smoothly however if i pull it too fast then the window can't drop quickly enough and catches causing the horrible judder.

I took it to Porsche center Cambridge who advised me to open the door slowly and not pull too fast ....thanks PCC but i already knew that i just wanted the problem fixed. I've tried the doors on my dads Cayman S and no problems there, the window drops perfectly and as quick as you like.

I shall take it in and ask for them to check the regulator

Before you do that it may be worth lubricating the window seal with some silicon spray as this can reduce any binding and speed the drop process up a bit.

My old 996 did something similar, but basically it was the window regulator. The cables stretch so if you can still hear the motor working when you open the door the it is just taking up the slack rather than dropping it. The fix is a new regulator. I changed my own, it is a bit fiddly but not too bad for a DIYer.
