Hi all,
Sadly I will be selling my lovely 2002 manual 996 turbo shortly.
A couple of questions:
Should I get an inspection done before sale?
It's got a milltek exhaust and RUF springs, spacers etc. should I take all this off and revert back to standard?
What's the views please?
Thanks.

I am looking for a 996 Turbo. So far I have not considered anything that is available privately as I would be concerned about the lack of any after sale care so I would say it would definitely be a good idea to have an inspection done. I would also rather have a standard car but I am sure other will probably like the mods.

Interested in a turbo cab?

An inspection (PPI) is usually the responsibility of the buyer - if wanted - not the seller. I wonder how much difference it would make anyway - if I thought an inspection was important, I'd want it done by a garage I know or one that was highly recommended - not necessarily the one you use. In addition, unless you sell the car fairly quickly, it has less and less relevance - a car that had no issues when it was inspected a couple of months ago doesn't mean much now.

From a mod point of view - although I've had mine mapped, I don't particularly like buying modified cars - it will limit your market I think. At the very least, I think you need to make it clear the original parts are available and part of the deal.

ETA : I also doubt the inspection would help with people like JulesV because if the dealer come-back is that important to them, I doubt they'd even open your private ad to notice you had an inspection.

Thanks for the feedback so far, I have all the original parts so might put it back to stock. I recognise this will be a private sale, but wanted to give any potential purchaser some confidence in the car, hence the view of a PPI.
I'll have a think....

Just be willing to accommodate a PPI which involves you taking the car to a garage under your own steam.
I missed a couple as the vendor wouldn't do that. At this level for a private sale its a must.

You must also decide what your position will be after the PPI. They will pick out every rusty/used nut and bolt as that is what they are being paid for and probably provide the prospective purchaser with a quote to fix the issues.
Now as this will be done after a price has been agreed and as it is easy to find 2-5k worth of work that "could" be done on most 996t then what are you willing to do then?

Which is the reason why many sellers sell direct to indies/opc

I bought my 911SC unseen on the strength of a Peter Morgan inspection that the dealer made available.

I got exactly what I expected and in my opinion it was good for the dealer too as I bought the car aware of the small faults it had.

Although it's not common practice I would say it's a good idea to have one done before you sell the car. It will give potential buyers a lot of confidence and removes/reduces any areas of doubt.

That's assuming you're confident the car is as it should be of course.

P.S. I'm looking for a 996 Turbo coupe too and would prefer it to be unmodified.

Thanks again for the continued feedback.
I might well go ahead with an inspection at my local porsche indie and go from there. I guess worst case is have the list available to the buyer and adjust the price accordingly if it's exhaustive.
I'm confident in my car, all usual areas have been addressed ( rads, clutch, brakes, tyres, major service etc), and the mods are only to the suspension to improve the handling/appearance and the exhaust was for abit more sound, but its all subjective.

I usually buy cars privately and bought my last Turbo S that way.

Tbh, the fact that you as the private seller had it inspected wouldn't really do much for me. If I was inclined to buy a car on the basis of an inspection then I would want to commission that. If you said the inspection was a glowing report then I would probably take that with a pinch of salt and if, as is more likely, it provided a list of things on a to-do list then I would wonder why you didn't just get them done now that you knew about them. I am sure others might think differently tho

Standard.

Priced competitively.

These cars appear harder to shift privately based on the time I was looking.

I bought mine highly modified from a private seller. I was specifically looking for such an example. It's also got high miles and I paid top end for it. It was up for months.

But it was perfect, sailed a ppi with no mechanical issues (needs a respray on bumpers though) and has been utterly perfect since. There are buyers out there, you might just have to wait for the right one.

Plus, aftermarket exhausts sound much better, my tubi sounds amazing and i'm glad I didn't pay the 3k for it.

I wouldn't bother with the inspection, the buyer won't trust the paper it was written on and if they are the sort to require a PPI they will only carry one out regardless.

From my point of view an independent inspection by Peter Morgan or someone similar even if provided by the vendor would provide added confidence. It also seems to me that many private sellers price their cars at much the same price level as well respected dealers. Price is therefore important I would have thought in achieving a successful private sale.

To be fair, you're hardly a typical owner though.

Don't make the mistake of thinking everyone has your level of knowledge or expertise.
