Views on 996 Turbos and 997 Values?

Hi guys

With my Exige almost sold am just about ready to get back into a porker ! I know its a classic predicament do you go 996 turbo with a solid engine but horrible interior (c4s previous Porsche ), or a nice low Milage 997 with good history? I prefer the 997 aesthetically but appreciate the heritage of a 911 Turbo.....and of course the engine!

Question of values:

A 996 turbo say 55-65k good spec and aero kit, solid history?

And

A 997 with good spec and aero kit and 20-30k on the clock, good history?

(Edit c2s on a 05 plate)

Both would be manuals

After private sale value opinions

I assume you have looked in the PH classifieds.
Based on the autumn market I would say look there and then take 10% off any price.

Sorry to ask but WTF is that in your profile pic - did you remove the rear reflector from a 4S and stick a misha rear wing on it??

Yeah had a good look at the prices but it's always useful to talks to Porsche people about what is really selling for x price, dealer prices seem to be a bit all over the place at the moment and some private stuff just not shifting...

Am not sure who did the wing but research would suggest it was , it was done when I got it . The decals were done for a euro trip we did it looked "alright" not a purist thing of course. Each to there own and all that jazz.....

No worries imho it looks quite cool. I toyed with a wing a few years ago and my euro trip decals are quite eye catching so I'm in the choir as it were!
Just never seen anybody go to the trouble of binning the iconic reflector.

For a decent turbo in that spec with a likeable colour combo and a manual gearbox you will be looking at £24-25k minimum.

Is the savannah interior a killer when it comes to resale time ?

What do you want the car for?

If I were looking for a DD I'd stick with the 997, but if it's a weekend car the 996 Turbo would be more special IMHO.

In the long term I also think that the 996 Turbo will hold it's value better than the 997 which will become just another vanilla 911.

I actually like savannah but it appears the black holds some premium over grey/savannah

It's only going to be a weekend car only , so not a DD ... The depreciation is always a concern but good 911 will always demand good money I think

Got to say I like my 996 turbo X50 interior.

I've seen some pretty bad 996 interiors if they're plastic and no leather, but my 996 turbo is a nice place to be and once I hit the afterburners the only place I'm looking is the road ahead.

I have also been in 997's and the interior can be nasty if it has the wrong combination of materials.

It'll be interesting to see how the interiors date. This is someone who's spend 9 years using 3.2's as daily drivers and I've got to say I love the functionality of the earlier cars!

I went for the 996 turbo over 997 C2S, it's a more special car IMO and I wanted to own a 911 turbo!

You'll enjoy whatever you get. Great choice to have, enjoy.

Savannah and grey do appear to be resale unfriendly - assuming you ignore the likes of kidney green.
Equally natural tan brown isn't popular.
The thing is it doesn't mean you can't like them - I like the lighter colours so both savannah and grey would be ok. Having said that mine is metropole!
Depending on what you want to use them for my choice would be the 996t or a gen 2 997 for weekends and daily respectively.

If you look over on 911UK two things will hit you:

1. Demand for good clean 996 Turbo's with a manual gearbox are really at a high. I know a few people after one and the feedback is that even indy dealers are struggling to see good examples of such cars. Consequently prices are closer to £30k and if its an X50 definitely £30k - £36k (CXhappel Cars just took a deposit on nat advertised at £36,995. So a private sale will be closer to £28k - £29k rather than £24k.

2. Lapis Blue exterior was supposed to be kiss of death as well as Savannah. But in reality there is a growing groundswell of prospective purchasers after such colours. The only time one gets to choose colours is ordering new. If a car stacks up in terms of condition and history, some will be able to compromise on colour. In fact Savannah looks nice and attracts many nice car, love that light interior" comments to me.

Your biggest challenge is going to find a good example - they're a bit scarce at the moment.

Interesting points on the 996 turbos it does seem good ones are hard to come by, what's peoples views on the value of a 997 with 20k on the clock, aero kit , almost all options c2s , In SY., excellent history , wants for nothing as far as I can tell

For your own sake, buy on condition and not on mileage. People are missing out on some lovely cars at 80k+. I know, I bought one and it's been faultless. Loads of receipts, loads of work done on all the major serviceable items, there was really nothing left to change and it flew through a ppi.

People think at 50k it's still got plenty of life in it, but disregard what time can do to a car, after all you are looking at a 10yr old motor.

I was interested in that car, but it ticked a lot of boxes - manual, low miles, x50, aerokit, lots of interior options and black leather. it would not have been that premium price with cat-sick savannah interior and I would not have considered it.

A good black/black car with sub-40k miles will fetch £35k, 997 turbos at £42k are starting to look attractive

Would love to get a 997 turbo would be the prefect solution but am 10k short for one so will need to wait a bit later till they get in budget.

Totally agree re condition over miles etc, if there was a well spec de aero kit fitted example with 80k on the clock I would consider buying it no issues at all, it's just the one I found had ultra low miles backed with solid history.

My thinking is that I can influence its treatment early into the engine use , eg regular oil changes , upgrade the thermostats , 3 rd rad etc to reduce the wearing affects. Just trying to gain a understanding of what's selling not advertised prices.

My thinking is 27-32 k for a mint example for 996 tt

You will miss the noise going to a turbo whatever exhaust you stick on it.

Save and get 997 if you have already had 996 imo(please no black or silver)
