I'm hoping someone might know how to go about repairing the keys for my 997.2

Both keys have 'failed' in the same way - a pair of tiny plastic lugs that are part of the lock/unlock button have snapped-off and the buttons now just drop-out of the key. You can see one of the lugs (detached from the button) in the piccy.

I spoke to my local OPC who informed me that I can't replace the buttons. No parts or repair kits are available from Porsche for the Gen-2 keys apparently. However, they would kindly sell me 2 complete new key heads for about a quadrillion pounds each - all for a tiny bit of broken plastic. Ouch!

Does anyone know if there's any kind of aftermarket repair kit available, any way to attach the buttons without the lugs, or if there's any other alternative to buying complete new key heads just to replace a broken button?

Thanks in advance.

You need to take a look at this thread, that's been running recently.

Something like this happened to me with a previous car and I was just about able to fit the red bits back into the fob. There was no way I was going to pay the money the OPC were asking. Some things are worth it, but that really wasn't. Take a look at that link anyway and it may solve your problem.

PM me your details - there is a group buy running, and I should have a load of key cases arriving shortly.

It's no more than a 10 minute job to switch over the internals and far cheaper than buying a replacement directly from Porsche.

I'm in the process of creating a more detailed 'How to' guide, but there are faily reasonable step by step instructions in the previous post mentioned above.

Got your PM but keep receiving bounce backs whenever I reply.

I have a load of both 2 and 3 button key cases on their way to me as we speak, would expect they would be with me by end of this week, so I could dispatch to anyone that wants them early next.

Upgrading a gen 2 key is even easier, as the transponder is only stuck in place with a single blob of glue, unlike gen 1 where it seems they apply a whole tube of glue!
Internals simply swap across as per my how to in previous thread, and should not take any more than 10-15 mins .

Many thanks for the replies - looks very encouraging.

Elliott, have PM'd you regards the key cases. I'm really hoping your solution will work for sensible money. The thought of having to spend several hundred £££s at an OPC, just to replace a couple of tiny broken buttons, was really pi**ing me off!

Are you sure you cannot replace just the plastic bits via the opc route .

Mine was repaired under warranty and I am pretty sure they didn't replace the key .

According to my local OPC, there's an official Porsche repair kit for the Gen-1 keys, but not for the Gen-2 yet.

Lazy thought whilst daydreaming...

Customer: My car's engine exploded
OPC: I'm afraid your extended warranty's invalid as you have an aftermarket button on your car's key, sir!

laugh Mind you, given their track record for insisting on genuine parts fitment, anything is feasible.
