Key out of ignition but engine still running!

Sorry not in to modern electronic controls but can see the probability as they prohibit everything with sensors everywhere. I'm just an old dinosaur.
Would have been an instinctive retort from me, too, a few years back
For the uninitiated, the running-on could happen in an old be-carbed motor if the plugs and/or combustion chamber / carbon deposits get so hot due to a cooling problem that even with the ignition off i.e. no spark, there is enough heat in there to cause a petrol engine to keep on igniting the incoming fuel air mixture, also with the aid of the heat of compression. I.e. the petrol engine goes diesel.
With moderns this is not possible as the injectors stop firing fuel when the ignition is turned off.
A little history lesson about the time when cars actually smelt of petrol and the only two things that could go wrong with an engine were no fuel or no spark

This happens to my turbo periodically. On every occasion it happens I discover that the key has come out a little from the fully-pushed-in position. If you push it in first then turn it off it goes off. Or replace the key and turn it off. A bit disconcerting but nothing more than that.
