Thinking of picking up a Porsche 944

So I'm thinking of picking up a Porsche 944 as a bit of a fun car for weekend use and the odd commute here and there. I have got about £3K to spend on one which, from the looks of it, should get me a nice oval dash 2.5 Lux 8v/2.5s 16v/2.7. I'm not looking to get an S2 or turbo as for some reason I can't seem to get classic insurance on them. Plus in my price range I don't think I would be able to get a nice one.

Has anyone got any experience in running one of these and any tips on what I should look out for when buying one?

You have the same criteria as me before I got mine.
Yep it aint fast and there is Porsche snobbery because its not a 911 but judged as a sports car its a great one.
Its a more modern 240Z in a germanic style.

Any excuse to drive mine I take.

Have a look at www.tipec.net & the associated forum. There are currently a couple of cars on there for sale as well as a buyers guide which you'll find very helpful.
The TIPEC insurer is Asset Trust who should unless you're a truly horrible risk offer classic insurance on all the 944 range. I used to pay £130 on my 944 87 2.5 Lux.

I picked up a 944 S2 a few mths back as a fun car to use on track occasionally. The previous owner had spent around £12k on it in the 5 yrs he had it and upgraded key components such as adding KWv3 coilover suspension and a full mo30 brake upgrade (callipers and discs). Promax have done most of the work and is a rust free car. Cost me just over £5k. I think you are better off paying slightly more to get an absolute cracker than slightly less where there are many projects around waiting to swallow a few grand in a very short period of time.
