Awful!

It makes the steering very light at low speeds, which is sort of OK for parking, but not so good when it comes into play on, say, a mini roundabout, and all the weight vanishes from the steering while you're actually driving.

A lot of demonstrators seem to have it so it shouldn't be difficult to find a car to try out.

I can not quite recall why or how it happened but I ordered it in on my UK Turbo S.

In my view it does not weight up at speed.....Same totally unconnected feel at 5mph and 145mph... useless on track

It can presumably be taken off fairly easily. It sounds pretty horrific!

Why would anyone want it? I think Porsche ordinary power assistance is pretty much perfect - heavy enough when parking etc to remind you that you are driving a car (rather than playing on a Playstation) and reassuring at speed. I asked my wife (who isnt a powerhouse like me, obv) whether she found the steering in my car (987) heavy, and she said "I like it. It feels safe". If an 8 stone girl likes the feel of the steering, why make a lighter version?

First of all let me say that the car is the exact opposite to what is in Autocar

Plenty of feel, 8-10s of an RS 4.0, good turn in. Build quality on another level. Very fast in gear acceleration, feels very planted through the bends.

You're confusing me. Plenty of feel, then zero feel? Is it a case of getting used to it perhaps?

Sounds terrible. Why on earth would Porsche offer it in the first place?

I seem to recall quiet some time ago. the way it was sold to me was that it is lighter at parking speeds, then over 37mph it weights up to normal. On my car it does not there is zero difference between 5 and 165

Sounds like a case of a very poorly informed sales person. I presume you were not able to try one with it fitted prior to purchase.

I would have thought that there could be other factors on a track - Levels of adhesion, was it wet?, tyres/pressures, geo-settings, 4-wheel steer?

I assume by that you mean Porsche hydraulic, power-assisted steering? It definitely will never apply to the electronic cop-out IMHO. The 991S I test drove (standard electric PAS) didn't have any feel either compared to the 997.2 (or my girlfriends 987.2 Boxster). More Audi than Porsche (as were the horrible, over-servoed, snatchy brakes).

Yep. Real steering.

I havent driven a new Cayman. I dont want to because I think the steering would hurt my feelings.

That's right, although the threshold is much lower than 37mph, more like 15/20mph IIRC. Above that I don't recall there being a massive difference between the steering on cars with and without, and I presume that's because they're identical, i.e just a software change to the provide the greater low-speed assistance.

Sounds like yours is on all the time. Although I've not done a lot of miles in previous generation cars with hydraulic assistance and so my references will be different.

The switch between the two modes is not subtle on the cars I've tried it on - 981S and 991C2.

A drive of another car might help....

Wow - although it sounded like that, I didn't really think it was going to be the case. I can imagine that being pretty frightening!

So the vehicle was delivered from Porsche like that and the OPC PDI didn't pick it up?!
