More early 996 advice - IMS upgrade
Discussion
Apoligies, I expect maybe this may have been done to death by the long termers here.
The internet is awash with infomation regarding retro fit of an IMS "upgrade". Its not allways easy to seperate fact from fiction, so may I ask if anyone here has done this task on their early 996, and are you pleased you did ?
If I believe what I read it seems a no-brainer as an insurance policy, and I should factor the cost into any purchase I consider.
Any advice appreciated.

I was thinking about this after I bought my 996. Still hadn't made up my mind when my IMS bearing made it for me. Engine rebuilt. Several thousand pounds. In retrospect, a few hundred on an IMS upgrade (perhaps combined with a low temp thermostat) would have been money very well spent.
Remember though, there's also the bore scoring issue. If you haven't bought the car yet, that would be worth having checked before purchase.

Hopefully that thread will get updated soon - would be good to hear some feedback & see some of the questions answered.I have an early 3.4 (R reg) and it was luckily running on a ramp and picked up as being noisy so was replaced pronto. That was very lucky - it's VERY rare that anyone hears the noise as a warning beforehand. Job was done (not under my ownership) by Mike at Sports & Classic, who also fitted a Hartech low temp thermostat for me last year when the water pump was being replaced.
I had mine changed on my C4S MY2003 even though there weren't any signs of a problem. Once out the bearing was found to be in perfect condition. Car had done 75 + K . Cost around £900 but that's a lot less than it would have cost if it had failed. For peace of mind it was worth it to me. If I bought another 996, whatever the year, I would factor in this cost and have it done, madness not to IMHO.
