Hi,

I'm thinking of adding promax power kit (chip, de-cat, hi flow air filter) to my 944 s2. Doe as anyone have any experience / thoughts on this? Also does it have any effect on the insurance?

Yes it will affect your insurance: any modification needs to be declared, but it shouldn't be a massive issue. I suspect the general insurers would be more likely to have a problem with it than specialists.

You won't see any massive power increases, there isn't much you can, or need, to do to the S2 engine. It will, however, smooth the power delivery out noticeably. Mine has no "step" in the power range at any revs.

Also look at the condition of the brakes and the suspension, and when was the geo last set up? All of these will affect how an S2 feels on the road more than chipping it.

I guess I'd start with general service items, and make sure everything is working properly. 944s are often running on worn leads, dis cap etc. I'd check the head gasket as well, as this is a bill that's looming on many of them, along with fuel leads, brake lines and calipers, basically making sure everything that might be needing attention is ok. They are incredibly well-built, so often parts are still working, but not at their best.

Then yes, I'd go for checking the set up, and the suspension condition. The cars on refreshed suspension are in another league when it comes to handling: not surprising when you think that most haven't been replaced since new.

I'll second Paul's suggestions. New, good, suspension is where its at. Obviously you'd get the geo too.
Promax fitted a stage 2 turbo kit and some KW3s to my turbo. Now the extra go is nice but the suspension made a whole heap of difference.

Does it have a catalytic converter? Far more S2s dont than do, but people seem intent on selling de-cats no matter what.

Is there an 'unleaded fuel only' sign on the binnacle? 1989 UK S2s dont have catalytic converters.

If you haven't already, I Suggest it may be worth looking at suspension, engine, gearbox and top mounts, steering components, bushes, and the head gasket.

You choose the order in which these are checked/addressed.

I took my car to jmg and am having most of these areas addressed at the moment on my turbo. Jon's knowledge is second to none so you're going to be in very safe hands. If you're interested in looking at power or delivery, it may be worth talking to Jon to see if there is anything he can suggest. You'll be in very safe hands.

Think I'll probably start with the suspension then and work my way around the rest (£££!)..;-)

Regarding if if has " unleaded only" on the binacle?? If you mean the fuel flap it does.. Does that mean it's got a cat? Also the manual recommends 95 RON, presumably 97+ is only a good thing???

A cat car will have a plaque on the binnacle, as I said. An '89 UK car will not have a catalytic converter.

97RON is usually better.

Sorry but what's a binnacle?

The binnacle is the oval shaped unit which incorporates all of the instruments. The plaque is actually on the bezel between the binnacle glass and the steering wheel.

You can just make it out in this picture. As I keep saying, 1989 UK cars do not have a catalytic converter.

Youll have a resonator, and taking it out really increases noise but I wouldnt expect to get any performance benefit.
