I have a magazine feature when the MK1 996 GT3 was launched and the writers took a yellow one to the Targa Florio. Ever since reading it I've been dying to go.
Definitely will one day!
I love the guy sprint out of the way at about 1.40.
I take it you go over and drive the route? The race hasn't been held since the 70's has it?

Exactly, the race itself was stopped due to casualties.
I don't normally do the short circuit but the full one, it's around 100 miles long. It takes in the short one anyway. Or some variation depending.
There is still a historic TF event run annually but this takes place on a very short stretch of closed roads.

Some bits, you can drive for half an hour without finding a straight that is longer than 100yds... in fact most of it is just curves! Scenery always very pretty, roads very empty for most of the route. Only bad point, "frane" or landslides are rather common so in some places the tarmac goes wavy or stepped... Not very chin-spoiler friendly! You tend to scan the road surface a lot, many frane are signposted, but not all. Not always visible until too late! Nevertheless road maintenance seems to be close to non existent, benefit of that being excepting any new movements, you learn the locations of the worst bits.
Will also do Etna, and a couple other mountain roads in Sicily. Etna's ascents are also brilliant.
Car is down south at the moment so I don't have far to go, but yes I did drive it down from the UK, doing part of the Mille Miglia route, well, a part of one particular year's modern version of it. Very nice indeed.

...Richard Meaden in Evo I think - I remember one of the pics of the car lifting a wheel through a bend that really stuck with me. Been fascinated with the TF ever since! Like you, I must get there one day.Definitely will one day!
