o/e exhaust system

any ideas on how long the standard o/e exhaust systems lasts before a section or more require replacing. car 997 gen1 gt3 2007 (57) 25,000 on clock is it a time thing as well as age or is there a section that always fails first ?

OP....it will depend on the type of use your car gets I.e. is it driven all year round etc? The first thing that will need replacing will be all the clamps & then the seams on the boxes will go. A friend has a 996 & his boxes showed they were on their way at about 70k but every car will differ.

not much to worry about then as its not used all year round and not used in the wet

I suspect the moisture inside the silencers is the main cause of the rot. Driving in the dry will not have any bearing on it.

In the process of having the exhaust system replaced on my 996.2 GT3 Its done just over 40k miles but is now 10 years old. The car has been driven all year round by me, and I believe the first owner (Hunter66) used it most of the year too.
The seams are giving up the ghost on the silencer boxes, from the outside (not the inside), and the cats have been throwing engine lights for the last 10 months.
If you don't drive it in the wet and it's garaged and you don't use it often and hard on on the track I would expect the cats and boxes to last considerably longer than mine have.

you will be right i no with not a lot of use they will self rot. you say your on with this on your 996 are you replacing it with o/e or performance aftermarket ie stainless steel or even titanium both of these would cure latter problem and give you some extra bhp and torque

cat to man fixing can corrode after 2 to 3 years.

Replacing it all with OEM. I don't want to limit the trackdays I can attend by having something louder. I bought a set of very lightly used boxes and cats from Canada and shipped them over. Only cost a few hundred pounds for the lot including all the brackets. And they are in very good condition. Came off a garaged, dry run only car.

i take it that anything other than o/e is a lot louder then? does that mean just a bit or just silly loud.

They are all different. But almost all of them are louder than stock.
