electrical issues 964

964 had a recent repaint and I think must be letting in water from somewhere. The problem is that i'm now having issues with some of the electrics. Electric Mirrors, Heating, rear wash wipe have all mysteriously packed it in in the bad weather. Any suggestions as to what the culprit might be and where the water's likely to be coming in?

My usual reply with anything electric is to replace the earth strap. Especially if it's been disturbed for the painting.

But if there is a pool of water under either seat, yes you'll be having electrical problems.

If there is a leak you will have wet carpets. As there is an ECU under the passenger seat there's a good chance that water ingress has caused the problems you outlined.

If you can borrow a smoke machine, fill the cabin with smoke and see if any escapes via door seals, window rubbers, etc. Then replace the offending seal and dry the car out with dehumidifier or moisture pellets. Sunroofs can also leak if the drain channels are blocked.

Then it's a case of checking that each component works if 12v is supplied and then working through the switches, relays, ECUs until you find where the issue is. If you know someone else with a 964, ask to borrow a working ECU and do a swap - if it fixes the issues, then you know what to replace.

Update*

Thanks for all of the relies so far, finally found the root of the problem, but now have no idea how to fix it.

Investigation reveals that water is pissing in through the passenger side sun roof drain and across the roof lining. And trying to pass a wire up from the engine compartment shows that it pops out through the eye of the rear seat belts!!!

How does one go about replacing a sunroof drain??

You should be able to access it by unzipping the headlining near the rear window.
