Dear All,

I have a thought that id like to share. My car went into OPC for the PCM upgrade on Tues. Recently aquired 4S, drove superb. On picking up the car (beautifully cleaned)it just didnt seem to drive so well (slow pick up). Maybe in my head. Whats the consensus out there, is it possible that garages tinker with cars subtly in orderr for them to HAVE to come back for correction??? No accusations at all but just a thought!!!!

Could also be a coil pack or MAF problem after their 'free' clean. I'd never let an OPC wash the car after service, recipe for swirl marks on a new car.

I've stopped taking my X5 to the main dealer as it ALWAYS came back with a problem! They didn't even put enough oil in it at the last service and when I changed the ignition coils, I couldn't see the one they were supposed to replace a week previous when I took them out (I still had the same misfire they supposedly cured)! I now do EVERYTHING myself, even the bigger stuff - I suspect I have a greater mechanical aptitude than most of the people employed at the dealer!

Even worse for me when they sprayed cheap tyre dressing all over my black gloss wheels too!

Interesting, was over the moon with my service at the OPC in Bournemouth, not only was it cheaper than a specialist but they gave me a free courtesy car (cayman S) and provided a very personable service. I was blown away to be frank

If power was disconnected could it have reset an ECU, more often than not a car comes back from service feeling more spritely. If as we are lead to believe the auto gearboxes modify shift pattern (learn) to your driving style then this may have changed too!

I've bought my last two new cars from OPC west of central London. I wouldn't send a toy car to their service dept. Worst service dept I've ever had to deal in official network.

I have had some very bad experiences with garages, opc and independents over the odd 35 years I have owned cars.
Here's just the things I can remember from an assortment of cars I have owned.

Dent in drivers door caused on hydroponic car lift
Back bumper scratched on both sides
Told by an OPC that my suspension was shot on a 1 year old car (nothing wrong with it at all)
Water hose not put back correctly
Clutch burnt out
back seats ruined due to some heavy machinery left on them
seat belt put in back to front
steering wheel on two different cars put back off center (I think the garage though this was funny)
Exhaust tips cracked and badly welded back on
Charged for new spark plugs but not changed
Air con needed re-gassing, but garage ripped out the whole system and tried ripping me off for £3.5G
4x4 went in for rusty chassis work came back with bad timing issues, loss of power and generally totally screwed.
Rear light fittings left out and hanging in the boot.

I could go on. You would think by this list that I was taking my cars to some dodgy work shops but I do not. I will not mention names but some are recommended independents that I see a lot on PH forums.

This is why I valet my cars before I take them in for any repair and make sure the garage goes over the car with me and agrees on any marks or problems before I leave the car with them. Does not stop the problems but forces them to take responsibility for any damage caused by them and for them to rectify any problems they cause free of charge. Otherwise you just get the standard, it never happened here, it must of been like this when you brought it in.
