Quick question...how much approximately would a 997 engine rebuild cost, should the dreaded failure occur? Are we talking about £8k?

Also, has anyone calculated what the typical price differential is between a private purchase and a OPC purchase?

About £2 - 2.5K depending on model (Cost of the Porsche Approved Warranty)

It's hard to find any Gen 1 cars at OPC these days.

So what are we saying, if you have a 997 carrying mileage and it's a keeper get it done before it breaks as it will be cheaper to do and don't waste money on a Porsche extended warrantee?

Circa £10k from Hartech with a couple of bores/pistons and preventative work and their thermostat etc.

Porsche warranty is not £2 - £2.5k. My last one was less than £1k PA excluding breakdown.

The variance between a private 997 and OPC would be in the region of 7k.

My bro inlaws fathers rebuild on his 996 was quoted by OPC at 17k. He got it sorted for just under 11k from an Indy

I'm pretty sure it was a cracked liner. She'd only done 39k miles

If you own a Porsche car from a OPC and have it serviced at the OPC you might get 1/2 the cost paid.

My cousin paid 7k from Porsche for her rebuild.

But an OPC will still use parts which aren't as reliable as the Hartech rebuilds!

This is a good point and I guess the course of action would depend upon whether you were intending to keep the car or get shot once the repair had been done.

Rather than waiting for a rebuild, could an ok engine have upgrades instead? Or is stripping the engine needed in any case, and so is expensive in any case.?

Yes. With unlimited mileage. Ditched my 996 once that ran out though.

Porsche warranty on 997 is £1189 if renewal or £1269 if not a renewal. You would also need a 111 point check which costs £216.

Plus the cost of rectification of every 'failure'.

Plus removal (and where relevant replacement with genuine/approved) of any non-genuine parts, non N-rated
Tyres, trackers etc etc plus a major service if there's not a complete OPC history.

It can all prove very costly indeed just to cover the small risk of engine failure, so much so that it often just doesn't stack up.
