The 991 Generation 2 Wish List & Speculation

December 2011, that's when I clapped my eyes on the 991 for the first time. The now defunct Inside Line website posted a video of the 991 up against the R8 on some sun drenched run way in California. It does not seem that long ago.

A total of 3 991 cars were UK registered in 2011 which means that the facelift is not far away so, I thought I would pick some things I would want to see or expect to see in the new car. As we know heavily revised body-shells, reduced weight, new interiors and price-cuts are not Porsche's style for the facelift so keep it realistic.

Here is my wish list for the 991 Gen2 - what are yours?

1. Switchable sports steering. Enhanced steering via a dedicated button or linked to the main sport button. Failing that something on the options list for different software. They already offer one which ruins the steering further over standard so why not offer one which improves it

2. Larger tail-ights and front lights from the 918/Macan. The rears are too small and don't look right, we joked at the time of launch that they would be saved for the facelift

3. The rear spoiler. It is a mess.

4. The sun-roof. See item 3

5. The aero-kits. See item 3

6. Greater and better selection of wheel options. 20inch Audi wheel's don't count Porsche and neither do the blinged-up two tones you ripped out of a 'VW World' event near Romford

7. A proper manual 6-speed box, like the one in the 981

8. Interior stuff - The bucket seats from the 918 Spyder, as an option. Revised steering wheel from the 918. Revised door switchgear and finishers from the Macan. The naff default 'dark grey' black leather has had its time.

9. Many posters moan about the naff paint menu selections beyond the best 4 (black, white, red, yellow) ok, a couple of them are alright but how many 991's get ordered in mahogany ? What happened to having cool sports car colours ?

10. Ceramic brake sizes from the Turbo S.

6) A proper engine bay when you open the engine cover, not a plastic moulding
7) The ability to change the air filters without dismantling half the car
8) Wheels that don't look like they belong on a wagon
9) Not quite sure how to define this (and most of the above already contribute I suppose) but give the poor, damned car some heart & soul. The current one's such an anodyne, characterless thing.

IIRC, doesn't it have a device called a sound symposer (or something like that). From memory it's effectively a way of introducing fake engine noise into the cabin by way of a pipe/diaphragm and acoustic baffles etc.

ETA - It certainly sounds horribly fake and contrived from inside - better from outside though.

Don't all the PDK models already have this? The PDK Caymans and Boxsters I have had as courtesy cars have had something similar - that's if we are referring to the same thing, whereby pulling both paddles effectively engages neutral until pulling them again, which returns you to whatever gear you were in. Does the GT3 do it differently?.

Where's the button for this? I don't remember seeing it on the courtesy car I had. Although that was a cab, so perhaps not really necessary!

I am expecting it to no longer offer any manual gearbox option, new wheels, new colours, new steering wheel, some of the options to become standard and a slightly different PU. Oh, and 5ps of extra power, less emissions, more economy and a higher price.

In short - unexciting.

I will be surprised if a manual is offered. Buyers dont want them anymore.

If I was a betting man, (and for no other reason than because I have been thinking about it), I wanted to restart this thread.

I think an updated 991 is 6 to 10 months away, but.........

For my money, I would like to see:

- GT3 PDK Sports gear box (with the + and - bits the right way around)
- Rear steering (unlikely, but it would make a nice option)
- HUD
- 918 Steering wheel (very likely I think, finally a flappy paddle with MF)!
- Additional 25bhp (a C2 with 375bhp would make a lot of sense V F Type, etc)
- Lower springs (personal choice, I think 911s look better lower than even S-PASM)

For me, the fact you can't have paddles and multi-function is the single most irritating thing missing given it is available in just about every mainstream car - even ones from the VAG!
