997 Turbo - tyre options

Strangely a search doesn't come up with much helpful or recent for this.

The fronts are low and the backs aren't much better so full set required. Michelins fitted and pretty happy with them. Bridgestones and Continentals are a bit cheaper - is it worth saving 10% or will it just annoy me? I seem to remember reading Bridgestones cause a bit more road noise. Got to be N rated - Porsche warranty.

Etyres quoting £1033 fitted for the Michelins which seems pretty good. OPC quote with discount was £1200. Bridgestones £946.

Any advice/experience much appreciated

Given that you're tied to a P warranty Michelin PS2's are your best option. I found Bridgestones made more noise and offered less grip in cold conditions.

Yep, as above, PS2s if in warranty, Super Sports if not.

I have a full set of Bridgestones that came fitted on my GTS in the garage (changed to supersports) with 4-5mm on them if you want a 'tie me over till the warranty runs out' set. £400.

Michelins it is I guess.

Thanks for the offer Mr T, but the warranty won't be running out while I've got the car! You need big kanunas to have a 997 T without a warranty IMO

I have the SS tyres and mine is in warranty. No quibbles from my garage of Porsche when work has been carried out.

Are they enough of an improvement to be worth the risk? I'm not convinced my car will stay on the road unless there is a small N on the tyre

Still think it's hit or miss whether there will be hassle with the OPC. Have a vivid memory of the telling off I got for having a, gasp, Bosch battery in my C2S

If it is in the first 2 year warranty - it is not an issue.

If you are in extended warranty, then it can be. Most OPC's will just get small stuff authorised regardless for service work. Renewals are more likely to be an issue as one of the checks is the same n rating all round. The risk is a big claim involving an inspection by the warranty provider... then you *could* be faced with a rejected claim for you £12K engine replacement......

PS2 is a very good tyre but the SS has it licked in every area. They are also miles better on track if that is important.

Bridgestones are a liability outside of summer but it depends on how you like your drive. As just a summer tyre I would rate is just above the PS2. I think the PS2 is well ahead in terms of an all rounder though.

The wear rate is slower due to the harder compound.

Under a grand from OPC for all 4 tyres is a bit of a bargain though, not sure I could resist that deal on the 'stones.

I think this one may be a bit of an urban myth. I think if anyone had had an engine or transmission warranty claim rejected based on Michelin tyres (assuming the correct size), we would have heard about it by now.

I can't see a refusal holding water if you fit the correct size Michelins MPSS on a Porsche. Porsche would look stupid considering Michelin and Porsche have a long and public partnership on tyres. What sort of a message would that send out about Michelin tyres if Porsche blamed the tyres for an engine or gearbox blow-out ?

I've just renewed my Pirelli Pzero Rosso's on the rear of mine after getting 2 punctures in less than a month.., I did think about the PS2's as I did a full set on my C2S.


Spoken to a few other owners and they suggested the Bridgestone's were v good but extra noisy...

I have the extended warranty and nothing has been mentioned at all. I was told (regarding wheels and tyres) that if they are the same fitment as the Porsche items then there would be no problem.

I had these and they were far less stable and grippy than PS2 or Bridgestone. They were also more noisy than both. Fun tyre to drive on though with less grip

I know a number of people who have had their extensions refused simply due to different 'N' numbers on front and back axles. Have you had a recent renewal with non N rated tyres fitted? Can anyone confirm a warranty renewal within the last 6 months where they have had non N rated fitted and, if so, at which OPC?

I'll be able to tell you in May when my renewal is due but my OPC told me it is no problem. My OPC is not in the UK though.

I put a set of PS2s on my turbo and they've made a massive difference in the wet and dry - they replaced Pzeros which were awful in the wet and not very confidence-inspiring in the dry either. I've got MPSS on my m5 and would've put those on if they were n-rated because they are spectacular in all conditions (though I am very happy with the PS2s): I'm using them in the current weather and they just grip even when driving very enthusiastically in the wet/cold.
