Light weight tyres

Many threads here recently regarding tyre performance, speed rating et cetera. With manufacturers now providing info regarding, efficiency, noise and wear rates. One of my main buying priorities is to reduce the rotating mass as much possible but finding any info regarding tyre weights is not easy. I have recently replaced my tyres with PS2's; does anyone know how these compare on the weight front, with the other usual suspects from the performance range (not necessarily concerned if 'N' rated or not)?

No idea about tyre weights I am afraid, sorry.

I know it sounds obvious but have you changed the wheels?

Tirerack's US site provides such info in the "specs" tab of each tyre.

For example, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 weights given for all the different sizes and profiles...

The ps2 is a great tyre but a old design. So it's not going to be very lightweight vs the new crop.

Total BS.
Given there are weights actually published, a PS2 weighs the same or slightly less than say a Supersport. Just picking randomly.....
235/40/18 95YXL.
PS2 - 22lbs, Supersport - 23lbs
285/40/19 103Y N rated
PS2 - 29lbs, Supersport - 30lbs

The new AD08R (does this qualify as a new crop) is 26lbs in 235/40/18 size as another example.

Dunlop SP sport maxx TT in 225/45/18 95W XL is 24lbs, PS2 225/45/18 95Y XL is 23lbs.

Do you remember that conversation we had about there being moments when an opinion wasn't enough and one should refrain from using it in such situations?

I don't remember no :-) as you often edit or even delete your posts if wrong :-), but on the other hand I don't mind being wrong and admitting it.So yes it does seem the PS2 is still a light tyre which I find strange for such an old design. (I must say the tyres I use are still listed lighter than PS2 though)

I have been running Dunlop Race maxx from day 1 of UK launch.
some sizes seem to be lighter than PS2 some weigh more, but seem to be 1 of the lighter tyres on the market atm.

I would have got Cup2's but not available when I got these.

I am a PS2 fanboy though, must had have easy 10+ set of PS2 but now I just buy PSS and will be on my 3rd set of those.

they will go well with my Race maxx for sprinting in 2014, the PSS will be my wet use tyre.

Why not save up and buy a proper sports car like a GT3

car not much use with poor tyres, every car I own I end up buying a set of tyres.

thing is I have got though quite a lot of cars the last 2 years and have changed tyres on all on them, GT3 inc.

You're not seriously going to choose tyres based on their weight are you? Performance is always King for tyres and I doubt you'll find any high performance premium tyre that is significantly heavier than its competitors.

Just buy SuperSports, easily the best road tyre for any Porsche in all conditions, barr ice and snow. Good for track use as well, though more dedicated track tyres will reduce your times.

I am still rocking my original SS tyres after 10,000 miles and plenty of track days, not only great performing tyre but one which seems to last forever as well.

I changed out my OEM 996 GT3 mk1 Wheels/Toyo R888 with OZ Wheels and Michelin Cup tires. Saved more than 18 kg of rotating mass, and I have no doubt that the Cup tire is also a performance ugrade. The Toyo R888 is HEAVY.

I've just spent more than a week in two Porsches fitted with PSS - a Panamera Diesel and a 991 Cabrio. Temperatures were around freezing, with snow and slush on the road - conditions where I'd normally be happiest with my 997 on its winters, and definitely not on its PS2s. I was very pleasantly surprised with just how well the PSS grip, stop, turn and go in these conditions - they do seem to have a wider operating range than the PS2s, which start to get a little lumpen and harsh below 5°c. I gave them a pretty good workout in both cars, the result being that, as soon as my PS2s expire, I know exactly what I'll be fitting next.
