Hiya,

did a brief search on this and opinions are mixed.

Q: do the 12V sockets in a 987 Cayman ever turn off? or is whatever is connected to them drain the battery ?

I have bought one of the cheap DVR cams to play with and it seems that even after I get out and lock the car, it keeps blinking away recording. So the power is not cut off, at least not within the 5 minutes i stood by the car before pulling the plug out. Any clear info on that?

Cheers

Certainly the socket in the centre console beside the handbrake is permanently live. It is often used to connect a battery conditioner for those drivers who leave the car undriven for long periods.

Good question.

I plug my TomTom into that socket but I always unplug it when I put the car away so I've never noticed if the charging light stays on.

Drat. Looks like i'm gonna have to modify the lead and put a little switch on it. Oh well!

Cheers for the responses.

Depending on what you need, you could probably get an OPC or specialist to set up another socket hardwired to a switched source - rear wiper is quite useful - and then use that.

Has anyone tried the small DIN socket in the centre console? Possibly ignition-controlled?

All three sockets in any 997 / Cayman / Boxster and on are always live.
