My MkII GT3 is stock and, while it sounds OK at high RPM, it could do with a bit more audio-presence at idle and low revs.

I don't want anything too loud, and I have no real need for extra power as I don't use it on the track.

I've seen some old (~2010) threads which mention Cargraphic, Europipe and DSD Motorwerks. Is there anything to add to these or does anyone have preferences which haven't already been posted in the older threads?

I have a Designtek Predator system that is nearly unused if you are interested (used one summer, appr. 4000 miles)
It's sound is quite like you describe: Louder than stock at idle and low revs, but the sound rolls of a bit when you start pushing and is not much louder than stock at high revs. Very light (half the weught of stock system), with high flow cats etc.

The sound at start-up and idle/low revs will turn heads, as it sounds like a big-capacity high power engine at those revs.

Most other exhaust systems are the other way around, being more different from stock as the revs rise and the car is pushed hard.

This link is for what ive done - oem - oem cats/straight out/oem cats to Afterhours style out

Much prefer the latest exhaust though do miss the loud pops and cackles on the over run.

If your near North Herts, drop me a message and ill take you out for a spin.

You could check wit 9e if they also have a switchable system for 6GT3... Got one on my 9eXX, absolutely love it, brutal sound at any rpm when open and docile when I want it more quiet. My system was bespoke build with 60% straight through to avoid back pressure when the car runs at full chat, I think their standard systems are 40% straight through.

I work in aerospace engineering, so I removed the boxes from my 996 GT3 and had one of our welders put a 1.25" diameter bypass pipe in. It's a tight fit and I'm not sure you would get a larger diameter pipe in there. The welding is a work of art (manual TIG) and once I replaced the boxes with new clamps I was very happy with the sound, especially at low revs. It makes some nice pops on the overrun too. Total cost (apart from the new clamps) a packet of chocolate hob nobs!!

find out what this guy did and do the same http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwnprteAnjg

I've heard an Akprovich on a 997 GT3 RS 3.8 and it sounded very similar to the vid.

Don't do the M&M cup like in the video if you expect to be in the car without a helmet for prolonged periods, this is from experience.

Try http://www.speedtechexhausts.com/

Great reviews in US and they are doing a deal on ceramic coating right now.

Whoever you decide to go with, make sure they flow test during production. So many companies simply make a pattern for loudness and the results are shocking.

Has anyone heard the Carnewal GT exhaust on a 996 GT3?

I had Carnewal mufflers on my 993 and they sounded great.

Mine's an M+M Cup exhaust with side cans - the one in the video doesn't have the side cans. It's not that bad inside - a conversation can be held quite normally when cruising at 100 or so. Sounds good outside without being overwhelming.

Hi gents, I'm reviving an old thread as the noise of my current custom exhaust is on the limit of noisy track days (104-105 static) and I'd like more quiet track day options.

The car's currently in at GT-One who have advised a return to a full OEM system is frighteningly expensive (£9,300 incl VAT and labour!).

They also tell me the existing Fox system (which was custom made when I lived overseas) cannot be interchanged with any other parts - e.g one option might have been simply replacing the silencers with e.g. Dansk, but these will not fit the current system. Nor will OEM style cats (I currently have 200 cell sports cats on the Fox and again these cannot simply be replaced individually). Hence the full replacement cost.

So, any recommendations on a full system that won't break the bank and allow me onto most track days (ie no more than OEM loudness)?

Ideally I may ebay the Fox system as it's still in good shape so that will help me to recoup some costs. Would be helpful if anyone can guide me on what a used full exhaust system goes for these days.

A Cargraphic "Quite" system might get you on most track days, but it will probably not meet your definition of Breaking The Bank.

I think most after-market exhaust systems will preclude track days.

Hmm, yes. I'm also investigating a simpler solution like DB Killer (although I can't seem to find this product for 996 GT3). Seems a shame to junk a perfectly good exhaust just to get 3dB reduction in noise.

Yikes!

Perhaps consider a custom bolt-on that's the opposite to this (for a 997), i.e. connecting to existing outer exhausts with silencers leading to centre exits?

Yes, I think that would a next step to investigate after looking into an off-the-shelf bolt on.

Take a look at Kline, very decent header back system, not too loud, very light and reasonable £
