Just thought Id post as it seems a lot of people are fitting these kits,I have inspected a couple of 996 recently and also 993 with these after market kits fitted,as far as the 993 is concerned the beam throw is far superior and quite (on the face of it) a good upgrade as the factory lamps are quite poor, the 996 has a better beam throw from standard, however the kits I urge caution over are the cheap £70-£100 range items available on well known auction sites,it is vitally important to have these fitted (if you must buy them)and mounted correctly away from any flammable areas or materials, I have seen as I said a few now with signs of heat damage and dangerous installation around the ballast unit,in some cases the ballast just loosely mounted in the headlamp some have looked like they have got very hot in use due to poor quality ballast kits and poor fitment,I would advise professional installation and regular monitoring of the units the Chinese ones are a disaster waiting to happen,the German kits seem more robust and better finished albeit a bit more expensive,it should also be noted that the early lamp lenses are not designed with xenon bulbs and can cause glare to other road users when turning,a lot of factory fitted HIDlamps actually move to avoid glare when you steer.

If washers and self levelling are fitted then they need to work to pass mot. If the car does not have them fitted then it is not an mot failure, even with hids.
Otherwise the new boxsters with standard headlamps will have a problem in a few years time at their first mot as I understand they come with hids as standard but no washers unless an optional headlamp upgrade (including higher output hids) is selected.

All these kits come from China.
Germany does not produce Xenon kit as otherwise these would cost £500 with a lead time of 2 years.....
You just need to make a difference between the low cost and the high quality kits.
The only difference is the ballast that is made from better components.

Wrong. You need auto leveling and washers for a mot pass.
The car will only fail if it has auto levelling and or washers and either fail to work. My honda civic just passed its MOT last week with aftermarket HIDS and it has neither auto level or washers.
