In the last 3 years I have had the "sameish" sort of problem with 3 different 911's. Is this just chance!?
First the 993C2 had a fan belt break that meant the battery packed in on one trip costing me about 4 hours on the side of a motorway. Then on at least 3 occasions my 993TurboS had major pulley and belt issues that I finally resolved with a new Serpentine system that a fellow PH guy recommended- and it has worked. And the other night my 997Turbo pulley and belts packed in costing me another 3 hour wait on the roadside. Are these parts of the 911 engines a weakness or have I just been unluckily -thrice!!!!!!

Just unlucky I think, although it's common that 993 belts get replaced with non-genuine ones which are slightly shorter (5mm I think) which can strain the alternator bearings and no doubt cause other issues as the tension isn't right. With genuine belts there's usually no issues.

Surely anyone fitting a new belt whatever the make would make sure the tension is correct using the shims on the top pulley?

I think they're for fine tuning the tension on the correct sized belts. I'm just going by what I was told when getting a 993 I was keeping inspected and having all work done by a trusted specialist (who ran both my air-cooled race cars for 6 seasons and around 90 races with 100% reliability).

Probably right....one would be daft to start with the wrong size belt! Interesting that the difference is between pattern and genuine belts....I'll check that out next time I change mine.

AFAIK the difference is not with 'Porsche' vs aftermarket belts, but simply that there were a fair few different but very similar sized belts for the 993 from the factory. A/C? Varioram?

The most common mismatch seems to be 776 vs 760.

Seems I have just been unlucky then. In all cases the belts and pulleys were changed by Porsche Independents of Main Dealers so I would like to think the right belts were fitted!!!

Commented on your last post re this. Same happened to me, they do (993 turbo and s) seem to throw belts quite often. I've only ever had the correct belts fitted and I'm assured they've been properly adjusted smile

I got given the wrong belt by an OPC, and they looked the car up on the system.

Let me qualify that - they gave me a different belt from the one on the car that has performed flawlessly for six years.
