SOR car

Is it too cheeky to ask a dealer / specialist to put you in touch with the owner of a SOR car?

I know I wouldn't mind if there was the potential of a better deal for both parties.

Just tell them you need to speak to clarify certain issues with the car.

If they refuse just walk away .

It is odd to ask to speak to the owner - he/she has passed everything over to the dealer so that they can field all enquiries etc. The dealer gets paid for doing this - trying to cut him out won't go down well (nor should it). If you buy a house do you try to cut out the estate agent (who gets paid by the seller, not you, same as for SOR cars)?

I'm sure if you had some specific (and reasonable) questions the dealer would be able to get answers for you.

With an honest request (i.e. the owner wants to sell through a dealer rather than deal with anyone him/herself, but I want to contact him/her directly) there's no way you'd get the info from DVLA (and rightly so).

Whats odd about it? We all know fine well that some dealers arent forthcoming with certain truths.

Of course the dealer wont like it, as they're not taking there skim off the top however surely the reason its on SOR is because the dealer is offering poor money for the car and the seller is trying to obtain the maximum return. Dealing directly with the buyer will surely increase the price they'll obtain.

If I could buy a house without paying the estate agent I would. Neither the estate agent or dealer offer any benefit to me.

Not rude at all. On these motors its far more than a few £k. As an example - I was offered a car a week or so ago for £72k - its now at a dealer for £82k... Unfortunately the car was wrong spec for me.

None really. Customer relations maybe. I know I'd be pissed off if a man was interested in my car and the dealer denied in any contact to have a talk about it.

Some dealers will SOR as they don't want to put money up to buy the car. If you want to cut the dealer out of the deal I don't expect they'll be interested.

I agree. Is that their decision to make or shouldn't they run it past the owner first?

Why the paranoia? The dealer is going to stick a two year warranty on there and deal with any issue that may come up. You have zero recourse with the private sale although the remaining warranty could be xferred.

If you have specific questions of the previous owner just ask via the dealer,its exactly what i did last car i bought.

Private sales at this end of the market are less frequent and the owner will be bettering his dealers outright buy offer so i dont blame them. Id sell mine this way probably. Its no different to what JZM do.

They have a contract with the owner, to sell the car and pocket a fee. I'd say it"s their call, not the owner's.

Did you find your last house or car by knocking on any and every door that had the potential to fulfil your requirements? Or did you look at some sort of marketing material first, possibly via some sort of aggregator?

I understand what you meant, but I don't blame the dealer for their stance.

I just find it odd that the majority seem to think its the dealers call to make the decision on whats not their property. Don't get me wrong, I know they're in business but come on.

Absolutely. At a guess I'd say you were a teacher or something in the public sector. You clearly have no idea how private enterprise works.
