Cayman rad fan

hi, this is more of a paranoia induced question. (2007 cayman s)
on saturday sat in traffic for 2 hours - first time I've hard what sounded like a fan in the front kicking in. At first it would periodically switch on and off after a while, but after 2 hours it stayed on constantly until i parked the car (it would run even after normal travel at ~75mph for a while). Is that by design or something sounding fishy ?

It's possible that one of your fans has failed or is stuck which is causing the other one to run at full speed to compensate.

Normally if you have the aircon on both fans will run at slow speed ( not audible in the cabin ), if you put your hand inside the wheel arch you can feel a gentle breeze on both sides. I had an issue where one fan was stuck ( apparently they can get stones / debris caught ), as a result the other fan kept running at full speed ( noisy ) to compensate.

I mentioned this at my last service and the fan was changed under warranty. If it's stuck with debris you might be able to free it off by reaching under the car and turning it by hand.

It's normal. The fan will kick in like that to maintain cooling when there is no inflow from driving. It takes quite a while to kick in sitting in traffic, but it will eventually. It will then turn off after a little bit of driving at any real speed. A couple of minutes should have done it, though, I would think. Do you live somewhere hot?

Cambridge - not that hot! I'll have to get it looked at. It didn't kick in until 2 hours stationary in traffic so it doesn't bother me for now, but summer is coming..
