Warranty - extension & transfer Questions - pls clarify!!!

Hi,

I am close to buying a 2006 997 with 40,000 miles. with official porsche warranty until aug 2014. It will be a Private sale.

1. Is the warranty transfer instant? (Read something worrying about having to wait 90 days)
2. Will I be able to extend the warranty in Aug 2014? And for how long?

Finally any advice on buying private? Get a 111 point check done? Anything else?

I've just done the same

The warranty transfer is instant - you just send off a card which is with the warranty docs to Porsche. You only have to wait 90 days if it is a new warranty

You can extend again in Aug, provided the car is under 10 years old I think. To extend, you'll need to get another 111 point check (£200ish). The warranty is £1040 without Porsche assist or £1200 with. You can get a two year warranty if applicable, so you save the cost of the 111 point check in a year's time

Is there a need and did you get a pre-purchase inspection done for peace of mind, even though the car has the warranty, before transferring the funds.

Also any idea how much the annual check is? (Will only be doing 4,000 miles a year).

Also if the car needs new tyres, do I have to get them changed and pay for them from an official porsche centre in order not to void the warranty?

You'll need n rated tyres to comply with Porsche used car / extended warranty. Get them fitted wherever you want. AFAIK warranty will transfer. 111 check for the next warranty should cost £100 if you thrash out a deal.

If you're not familiar with checking cars out I'd suggest getting it inspected - otherwise how do you know it's not had badly repaired accident damage, or even just poor quality cosmetic paintwork? What condition are the brakes/clutch/tyres in? None are covered by the warranty and each of those 3 is £1000 give or take.

I used the 111 check both as a pre-purchase check and to facilitate buying extended warranty. The original bought the warranty 1 day before selling the car to me, and then immediately transfer to me the next day. No issues at all.

I will receive a 2 year warranty that will cover everything except consumables, then after 2 years I'll have to pay for another inspection in order for me to extend the warranty? If so that is shocking.

Pretty much yes, but if you have the inspection done at service time or mot time, you can usually negociate it as part of the price. Had mine done foc in conjunction with a service, but then they do make a commission on the warranty.

That's ridiculous. With my E92 M3 as long as the warranty hasn't lapsed, you've followed the service schedule and not done over the excess mileage the warranty just carries on with no inspection required. I think I might wait for the M4 first then. Shame as I fancied a change of brand.

Note that 'consumables' not covered by the warranty include clutch, battery and anything that could be considered due to wear rather than failure (suspension bushes for example). There is a long non-exhaustive list in the warranty book and it isn't a case of just add fuel. The battery is a funny one - they are covered independent of the warranty for 2 years from new, so if your battery lasts 23 months you get a new one with a new 2 year warranty on it whereas if it dies after 25 months it is your problem, and if you are in the middle of Belgium with a chunnel crossing to get to : your €260 bill.

Some (but probably not all) OPCs have anecdotally been known to waive the inspection charge on renewal if the dealer in question has had all of your servicing business and it has been done to book and your car is unmodified.
