997 GT2's - What do I need to know?
Discussion
I've never been too interested in the GT2's... however it looks like Ive been missing out on something pretty special by all accounts.
I've watched the videos, I've read some reviews.. but what do I NEED to know before I dip my toe?
Did they make Gen1 and Gen2 versions? are there bigger differences to the later cars than just PCM3 ?
Help me out PH.

I can't remember the split of 2008/2009 models and as far as I know the only difference on the 2009 cars was PCM3.Anyway, in answer yes you're missing out on one of the cars that people overlooked in the 997 range, hardly any came to the UK (60 cars?) and having owned a 996 GT2 for a few years I can say it moved the game on but retained the character of the original.
In my experience the 997 is closer to a GT3 in terms of steering feel and the power delivery is savage but more manageable than the 996. After 2 years and 15000 miles with a 997 it still makes me laugh out loud when I get on the power, I don't think I'll ever sell it.
Drive one, it's a car you'll find difficult to walk away from

Basically a GT3 RS with afterburners, quite incredible cars really, they don't sound like a high revving motor and that's the biggest criticism really although can be fixed with an aftermarket exhaust if you really want to.
I personally don't notice the lack of noise, my son still says do you realise how loud it is when he's in the house and its booming through the walls from outside, its a much deeper noise than NA engine. I still maintain noise doesn't make the car go faster although the perception may be exactly that.
The reason you don't notice the relative lack of noise so much is that you have to concentrate on where you going full time, gear changes last just a couple of seconds between changes up and it will spin up the 325/30/19 rears under most conditions if not careful.
Its quite a compliant and comfortable ride really, its got PASM and Traction etc (Traction can be fully disabled in stages - I leave it fully on and it still spins the wheels!)
Very rare only 1216 ever made and around 60 in UK, most made in 2008, very few 2009 cars due to world economy recession starting at the time so a short production run, only difference is PCM2.x vs PCM3 (again sounds ok due to BOSE) and satnav is ok but a bit clunky I have the PCM 2.x version and actually don't mind it, it depends on what you compare it to, older cars have old tech that's all, it wasn't brilliant at the time and certainly isn't now, but it wouldn't stop me buying the car, rarely any good ones come up for sale, recent good ones have sold quickly at around £100K from OPC.
Can easily be reprogrammed to GT2 RS levels of output.
Good luck finding a good one though!
Oh and its still got a stick for gears, 3 pedals and a race proven Mezger Engine..... what more could you ask for? oh and exclusivity.
Personally love mine and cant see me ever parting with it, Can't think of anything that I would change it for really.

hmm....
yes, its all sounding like it should be the car to go for. I'm hoping to go and check out a car next week, Ive been looking through some old adds, and it looks like the prices are on the move somewhat over the last 6 months. I'm guessing the low numbers will prevent you from taking a bath on them?
Need to get out in one me thinks and take it from there.

997GT2 is a very rare car mainly because it was sold during the credit crunch. 1261 total worldwide production (the 1216 was a typo which I think I probably started -oops). C16 cars 34 '08 models and 28 '09 PCM3 models with at least one of the '08 models being written off.
The 997GT2's chassis was the template for the 997GT3 RS
The '09 difference is really only the PCM3 with some changes in the car electronics (eg making it easier to program an '09 to run the 997.2 LED rear lights)
email me through here and I'll send you the PDF product brochure which will tell you all the nice stuff on this awesome car.

Not as focussed/delicate a drivers' car as a 3, but some like it more on the road because of the torque.
You should also bear in mind that there seem to be 3 specs. Clubsport (cage and buckets), Non CS with comfort seats and no cage, and some non CS cars with seats but no cage.
There are only c16 CS cars in the UK, so should command a healthy premium over a non CS car.

The rare one is the Leichtbau option, As Porsche presented it with the new Alacantara Carbon buckets and little else, with PCM these ones come in at 1450kg DIN, the pimped ones weigh in at 1500kg You should also bear in mind that there seem to be 3 specs. If you can get one then you won't regret it. I love mine so much it is in a container being shipped from Dubai to Blighty! Picture below was from Monday this week!

Had 997 GT3 and changed to GT2, the comment on the torque for road use over GT3 is correct. Love the car and can't see me selling it anytime soon!
On the weight I can confirm it is 1,500kg, had mine rebalanced a month a go and the weight was 1,501.5kg with full roll cage and some fuel.

I think 1st owner did have it on track but he sold to me at 3,000 miles. Since then only road driving in Dubai. Currently just under 22,000 miles. Just had major service and discs are fine, so say OPC. Maybe different look due to high temp and dusty environment in Dubai?
An OPC said your discs were fine??? FM... you won't be getting that kind of service when its back in the UK!
For me the main limitation back in 2008 when I had the car was that the 325/30 19in rear tyres were only available as MPSC. Care certainly needed in the wet. That may not be the case now (tyres I mean not care).
But if you had the skill to handle it (which I don't) then SC and TC could be switched off and would stay off. See extract from the original brochure. Brave pills optional.
